The best and worst countries for broadband speed have been revealed in a new analysis.

Britain has been shamed in the review with its average download speeds found to be three times slower than top ranking Singapore.

Countries including Romania, Slovenia and Bulgaria are ahead of the UK in the analysis, while people in France, Italy and Australia typically get slower speeds.

    2) Sweden (40.16 Mbps)

    3) Taiwan (34.4 Mbps)

    4) Denmark (33.54 Mbps)

With a mean download speed of 16.51 Megabytes per second (Mbps) - fast enough to download a high definition (HD) film in 12 minutes - Britain comes 31st in the global rankings for broadband speed.

Table topper Singapore boasts internet speeds as high as 55.13 Mbps - quick enough to down load an entire HD movie in just four minutes.

Bringing up the pack is Yemen with an average download speed of 0.34 Mbps, where it would take two days to download a film in high definition.

In Australia it takes over two hours to download an HD movie on average.

The country ranked 55th in the world with an average broadband speed of 7.7 Mbps.

Dan Howdle, consumer telecoms analyst at Cable.co.uk, which ran the analysis, said the results showed the UK has lessons to learn from the rest of Europe.

He said: 'These results offer us a fresh perspective on where we sit in the broadband world.

'Relatively speaking, we are near the top of the table.

'However, many of those ahead of us - some a long way ahead - are our neighbours both in the EU and wider Europe.'

The findings are based on more than 63 million broadband speed tests which were taken over a year, and the results collected by M-Lab.

The research comes after a UK government study last month found that ministers should double the minimum legal broadband speed.

The new Digital Economy Act sets out powers for the Government to impose a minimum broadband speed of 10 mega-bits-per-second (10 mbps) – typically fast enough to stream TV programmes over the internet.

But research by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport suggests a speed of 20 mbps would provide greater value for money.

The study, which was slipped out on July 30, suggests a legal minimum speed of 10 mbps would create benefits to the economy of £2.2 billion ($2.9 billion) once the costs of achieving it are taken into account.

Doubling the speed would create benefits worth £2.5 billion ($3.25 billion), even after the higher cost of achieving it is factored in.

Former Tory Party chairman Grant Shapps called on ministers to think again – and ensure Britain's economy is not left behind.

Mr Shapps, who is campaigning for ministers to get tough with the broadband industry, said: 'This is precisely the moment when Britain should be stretching our broadband speeds to ensure we're competitive in the post-Brexit global race.

'It is therefore concernin g that we should opt for the slow lane even when the impact assessment clearly shows more benefits from opting for twice the speed.'
