Willett to seek Ryder Cup advice

Ryder Cup captain Darren Clarke has hailed the "wonderful" performance of Europe's top players at the Masters.

The Ryder Cup Trophy Tour was officially launched by Clarke at Royal Portrush Golf Club on Tuesday morning, beginning a roadshow that will visit a number of European destinations over the coming months, helping to further build fan excitement ahead of September's event at Hazeltine. "It's a long way off before the team is finalised, a lot of big tournaments, a lot of Ryder Cup points to be played for", he said.

"So it was a very positive week for the Europeans".

"It's one of those iconic trophies that people don't really get the opportunity to see and with the tour it's going to let people see it", said former Open champion Clarke.

"It's certainly no surprise whatsoever".

Clarke was also pleased to see close friend Lee Westwood come joint second at Augusta.

Clarke insisted there was a long way to go in qualifying, though. "It's going to be as exciting for me to see how the team finalises as it is for everybody else watching".

Fans will have the opportunity to be photographed alongside the Ryder Cup free of charge, and pledge their support to the European team though social media.

"There would be very few people who have had as successful a career as he has had", he said. "As a Liverpool fan it was quite hard, but you know the man is a legend".It will be put on public display at Belfast's City Hall and The Dome at Victoria Square on Wednesday. I will go over and spend a bit more time with him shortly over in Manchester - he was more than willing to help me.

"To have the Ryder Cup trophy tour start off here in Northern Ireland is very, very special", said Clarke.

Meanwhile, Clarke will be hoping to strike gold instead of silver when he captains Europe against the United States at Hazeltine, Minnesota, from 30 September to 2 October.
