In Europe, getting from Point A to Point B is a snap. The train system shrinks what is already a small continent, making a whirlwind or far-reaching tour a reasonable possibility for anyone. For me, trains remain the quintessentially European way to go, and the best option for romantics. However, the proliferation of extremely competitive discount airlines — and more affordable car rental options — has revolutionized European-itinerary planning: It's turned vagabonds into jetsetters.

Over the years, my travel style has evolved. In the old days I used Eurail passes to go everywhere by train. But today rail passes come with more caveats — mainly that you've often got to pay extra fees to ride the fastest trains (and these trains require you to reserve your seat at least a few days in advance, cutting into the spontaneity that makes train travel a joy). Nowadays, I cobble together a mix of transit options: I buy point-to-point train tickets for one-off hops — and rail passes when I'm doing a lot of train rides in the same country or region, I take big leaps by air, and I drill into rural areas with a rental car.

Generally, European trains go where you need them to go and are fast, frequent and usually affordable. And for many travelers, the pleasure of journeying along Europe's rails is as good as the destination. Compared to flying, both trains and cars keep you close to the scenery and to Europeans. If you're connecting nearby destinations, the train is generally more practical than flying, and may or may not be a better option than driving.

When considering a car versus other options remember these major factors: Car rental costs the same for one person as it does for a small group; if you're packing heavy or aren't very mobile for another reason, a car is a blessing; and while cars are generally best for exploring the countryside and villages, they are expensive headaches in big cities.

To get between moderately distant cities, a train may be your fastest option. On a European train, it's a futuristic world: I was recently on a train going across the French countryside — it was silent, it was smooth, there was beautiful pastoral scenery out the window, and we were zipping along at 180 miles per hour into Paris.

The extreme speed of modern trains really sunk in when I noticed, in Munich's main train station, cute little birds that'd been squished to the windows of the trains — a surreal image. It occurred to me that this is a dangerous continent if you're a slow bird. I can't imagine this would happen where I live in Seattle — perhaps the bird would be enjoying the ride on the rooftop, sitting on a folding chair with a cigar and drink ... but not squished to the windshield. And European trains just keep getting faster.

The continent-wide upgrade to faster trains mean there are now fewer journeys long enough to make the classic "overnight trip" by train. Still, I love to sleep on the train when I can. By traveling overnight, I save a whole day in my itinerary. Say I'm at a Munich beer hall until late, when I stumble over to the station and get on the train, only to be navigating the canals of Venice by nine the next morning. Some travelers sit upright all night, aching for a flat place to rest, just to save a few bucks. I prefer booking a bunk in a dorm-like sleeping car called a "couchette" for the cost of a cheap hotel room.

These days, once I've booked my round-trip flight to Europe I start shopping for whatever one-way flights I need within Europe to put my trip together (and if I'm making any same-day connections with my trans-Atlantic flight, I arrange this as part of the same booking, and with a partner airline). When I first started traveling, it simply wasn't affordable to buy one-way airline tickets between European cities, but today that kind of thinking is so 20th century. After Europe deregulated its airways in the 1990s, a flock of budget-conscious, no-frills airlines took flight. That's driven prices down even among major carriers, and as I generally to stick with these, my one-way hops within Europe average about $100. But discount airlines can cut down the price even lower, with many fares in the $20 range — and the established ones, such as EasyJet and Ryanair, have route maps within Europe that rival their legacy competitors. (Just be aware that the cheaper airlines u sually use more remote airports, and have more restrictive baggage policies.) To get the lowest fares, book long in advance.

For me, a big part of the joy of travel is experiencing the sheer foreignness of the mechanics of everyday life abroad: eating different food in different settings, sleeping in new places, and navigating an extensive, efficient transportation system completely unlike our own. While driving and flying each have their place — and can be the most efficient and economic options — I love the trains. There's nothing quite like arriving somewhere by rail. It's part of the magic of Europe: While you can drive right up to the Austrian hamlet of Hallstatt on a pleasant highway and park just outside town, picture pulling into the hut-sized station across the lake from Hallstatt's cobbled market square, catching the waiting boat, and watching the town's shingled roofs and church spires grow bigger as the mist lifts off the water. That's an experience you'll never get at home.

Routes Europe in Bilbao: The Basque Country’s rising destination

The largest route development forum in Europe is heading to Bilbao in 2018.

The Basque Country is an autonomous region in northern Spain with its own culture, language and identity. Its varied landscape includes the Pyrenees and Basque Mountains, Bay of Biscay, coastal towns and villages, Rioja Alavesa wine region and the industrial surroundings of Bilbao.

The region is split into the provinces of Álava, Biscay and Gipuzkoa which have capitals in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Bilbao and Donostia-San Sebastián respectively.

As the historical Basque Country stretched from north-eastern Spain to southwestern France, Basque communities can also be found in the French canton of Pyrénées-Atlantiques.

Routes Europe 2018 will be held in the Basque Country's largest city, Bilbao. Situated on an estuary south of the Bay of Biscay, Bilbao was a thriving port and industrial heart of the region until it fell into decline in the late 20th century. The opening of the Guggenheim Museum in 1997 marked the beginning of the city's regeneration, and Bilbao is a remarkably different place to visit today.

Bilbao's unique character and largely undiscovered attractions offer a high quality alternative to more established destinations. The medieval quarter, Casco Viejo, provides a fascinating contrast to Bilbao's post-industrial edge and the titanium shields of the Guggenheim. Its Seven Streets (Siete Calles) are full of boutiques, bakeries, bars and restaurants. Bilbao is famed for its Michelin-starred restaurants and will host the World's 50 Best Restaurants Awards in 2018.

The city successfully strikes a balance between tourism and the authentic experience that can elude visitors to the usual tourist hotspots. However, its relative youth as a tourist destination mean that there will be significant potential for growth before Bilbao reaches its saturation point.

The growth in tourism is reflected in the constant rise in traffic levels at Bilbao Airport which handled 4.58 million passengers in 2016 (7.3% more than 2015). Bilbao is the most important hub in northern Spain with 44 European destinations.

Recent new routes include Seville and Ibiza from Volotea, Edinburgh with easyJet and Norwegian's Tenerife service. Traffic is also growing at the region's two smaller airports, Donostia-San Sebastián and Vitoria-Gasteiz (cargo).

Together with the ports of Bilbao and Pasaia (near San Sebastián), the airports form a significant logistics centre that connects the Basque Country to the rest of Europe.

Routes Europe 2018 is a brilliant opportunity to show the aviation industry what the Basque Country has to offer. The event will be hosted by the Basque Government and Basquetour at Bilbao Exhibition Centre for around 1,200 route development professionals from Europe's leading airlines, airports and tourism authorities.

The Basque Country's Minister of Tourism, Trade and Consumer Affairs, Alfredo Retortillo said: "We are going to offer you our genuine hospitality, ancient traditions, modernity reflected in the titanium shields of the Guggenheim Museum and last but not least some of the most Michelin-starred gastronomy in the world."

Want to try a ski safari? Head to Four Seasons’ upcoming European ski destination hotel

While Courchevel, in the French Alps, was in the spotlight during last year's ski season with the opening of the Barrière group's first hotel in the mountains, for 2017, the focus is on Megève, with a new luxury establishment in store from Four Seasons and Edmond de Rothschild Heritage.

The Canadian luxury hospitality group and the Rothschild family have joined forces to bring a new very-high-end offer to the Megève hotel scene. With it, Benjamin and Ariane de Rothschild will be boosting the profile of the ski resort in France's Haute Savoie region, which their family founded in 1920 with the creation of the Société Française des Hôtels de Montagne.

Already heading the resort's Chalet du Mont d'Arbois (five stars) and the Ferme du Golf, the new generation of the Rothschild family now hopes to bring fresh momentum to the ski resort with the new Four Seasons Hotel Megève. Competition is fierce in the French Alps, where the Haute-Savoie and Savoie regions are going head-to-head in a battle for the luxury market. The Barrière group opened its first ski hotel last year in Courchevel, where the Capezzone family also overhauled its Le Kilimanjaro hotel, which is now the K2 Altitude.

With the support of the Four Seasons group, the Rothschild family intends to ensure Megève is a prime destination for luxury travel with a new 55-room hotel, including 14 suites. This will be the resort's first hotel to offer direct access to the Mont d'Arbois slopes. In fact, nothing will be too much for the clients of this luxury establishment, which will offer "ski safaris" by helicopter, with links to Courchevel, Val d'Isère, Méribel and Val Thorens. The new establishment hopes to attract an international clientele, with visitors from the USA, Russia, the UK, Switzerland and France.

The Four Seasons Hôtel Megève will have the largest spa in the French Alps. The 900 sq. m spa will feature ten treatment rooms ready to pamper guests, while the indoor pool will have massage jets and counter-current swimming.

Finally, the luxury establishment also hopes to carve out a place in in the region's gastronomic microcosm, where Michelin-starred eateries abound. Competitors include Yannick Alléno at the Cheval Blanc (Courchevel), the Meilleur chefs in Saint-Martin-de-Belleville and Emmanuel Renaut's Flocons de Sel in Megève. For the occasion, the Rothschilds are moving their two-Michelin-starred restaurant "Le 1920" from the Chalet du Mont d'Arbois to the new hotel. Chef Julien Gatillon will stay in command in the kitchen. The Rothschilds will also be shaking up the traditional food scene with the resort's first-ever Japanese restaurant "Kaito."

Tesla Just Announced the Site of the Largest Supercharger Station in Europe

In Brief Tesla has selected Norway as the site for the largest Supercharger station in Europe. The 42-stall station will help Tesla achieve their goal of 10,000 Superchargers worldwide by the end of 2017.

Sizable Supercharger

If electric vehicles (EVs) are ever going to be widely adopted, a well-developed network of charging stations must be established. Tesla has said they hope to have 10,000 Superchargers around the world by the end of 2017, and this weekend's announcement that they'll soon be building the largest Supercharger station in Europe will contribute to that effort.

Telsa will build the newly announced 42-stall site in Oslo, Norway, and the nation is a sensible choice for such a build — Norway is a global leader in the use of electric cars, having offered incentives on the vehicles since the 1990s.

"In Norway, there is a lot of interest in and increasing knowledge about electric cars, and more and more choose it as their main car," Tesla Norway's communications manager Even Sandvold told NRK. "Then it is important to have a good infrastructure, especially for long trips. We build out charging stations along important itineraries and important destinations, making it easy to go for a long trip."

The Oslo site will be situated near the city's Rygge airport, which should facilitate integration with the country's wider transport network. While it will be the largest Supercharger station in Europe, it won't be the biggest repository of Superchargers in the world. Last month, construction began in Shanghai, China, on a charging outpost that will host 50 units.

Land Grab

Tesla's decision to build Europe's largest Supercharger station in Norway may seem like an attempt to fortify their position in a country where electric cars are particularly popular. However, the company isn't exactly dominating the Scandinavian nation's EV market.

In the first six months of 2017, sales of Tesla's Model S and Model X accounted for 45 percent of the entire market for electric cars in the U.S., according to statistics published by Forbes. However, the company manufactured only 15 percent of the electric vehicles sold in Norway over the same timeframe.

Tesla's construction of this Supercharger station in Oslo is a tactical move — by building up infrastructure, the company may be able to increase vehicle sales in Norway. At present, only Tesla vehicles can use these charging facilities, although sharing the infrastructure with other manufacturers is a future possibility.

While cornering the market for electric car sales is a major priority for automakers, having the best charging infrastructure could be just as lucrative. Charging points are set to become the new gas stations, and whoever is being paid for the electricity that's flowing from them into EVs stands to benefit greatly.
