Cheap Flights To Europe! Summer and Fall Fares To Rome, Paris, Amsterdam!

It felt like I saw European fare deals popping up all day today.  I was mostly ignoring them since we're well into summer and these aren't the lowest fares we've seen lately.  But, there are so many, I figured it was worth noting a few of them in case you're still looking for a good deal on a flight to Europe.

The Flight Deal has a number of deals on their front page right now:

$460 Round-Trip Summer Fares to Europe

Not the lowest price, but covers a ton of cities.  Mostly targeting American Airlines hubs, you can depart from Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas or Philadelphia to:

  • Amsterdam
  • Barcelona
  • Helsinki
  • Madrid
  • Paris
  • Rome
  • There's also $465 round-trip fares from Los Angeles and San Francisco to Barcelona and Madrid.

And, $454 round-trip fares from Los Angeles to Rome.

Or, $477 round-trip fares from New York to Amsterdam, Venice and Rome.  Boy, do I love Venice! It's a great city to get lost in.

Finally, $422 round-trip fares from Boston to Amsterdam, Milan, Rome and Paris.

    The Final Two Pennies

Don't think of a Charlotte to Rome fare sale as "Charlotte to Rome", or any other two city pairs for that matter.  Think of it as "US to Europe".  Use cheap flights or miles and points to cover that last leg to your dream destination.  Similarly, when fares are this cheap, leverage your points to save on hotel rooms to give yourself a truly affordable trip to Europe.

Cities like Rome are centrally located enough to get to lots of places in Europe.  In less than a 3-hour flight gets you to all kinds of interesting places, like Paris, London, Greece, Germany, Amsterdam and a whole lot more great cities.

Royal Caribbean: Major Player in Europe

Stuart Leven, vice president, Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA):Royal Caribbean Cruises is a major player in European markets with its three brands. Said Stuart Leven, vice president, Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA): "We market Royal (Caribbean International) as a family product, Celebrity as an upscale luxury product, and for Azamara we focus more on the destination experience as the ships often stay late or overnight in ports. They can go into ports where the big ships cannot get in and they offer their guests unique immersion experiences ashore.

"While the other brands here typically have very strong domestic markets, the unique thing about our brands is that they have a very different mix of guests, far more international. We rarely have more than 25 or 30 percent of our guests from one country. It is a very balanced mix, which I think gives a very nice feel to the ships.

"In addition, we offer a range of itineraries and homeports, giving our guests in the Mediterranean the choice sailing from Barcelona, Rome (Civitavecchia) or Venice. They can easily drive to these ports and we believe that is a big contributing factor."

Leven came aboard last December and has since announced a restructuring of Royal's organization in Europe. "We have had a lot of duplication of office locations and back-office functions," he said. "So we have now centralized our European offices in Barcelona, which is a strategic location and a natural place to be since it is also a major homeport for us.

"This does not mean we are pulling out of any of the countries we are in. Instead, we are focusing on building up our sales force to reach more travel agents."

Royal Caribbean currently has some 150 sales people in Europe and the main markets for the brands are the UK, Germany, the Nordic countries and Spain.

Leven said he divides travel agents into three types in Europe. "We have those who sell cruises that we keep up-to-date on product developments and itineraries," he explained. "Then we have travel agents who sell cruises as part of their mix and sell land-based holidays as well. We have to convince them to convert their customers from land-based holidays to try a cruise for the first time.

"The third group is those who are not at all engaged with cruise. You have to keep in mind that while 6.7 million Europeans cruised last year, that is only 4 to 5 percent of the total holiday market. So what we are trying to accomplish with our sales team is to reach the other 95 percent. And the best way to do that is to engage with travel agents who are not selling cruises at the moment."

With 10 new ships coming in the next nine years for the Royal Caribbean brands and a record industry-wide orderbook, Leven added: "We need to focus on generating new customers for future business."

Europe’s most unattractive holiday destinations by name

Angers in France made the list (Picture:: Andia/UIG via Getty Images)

Spending a long hot summer in Rottenegg or a romantic weekend in Piles doesn't sound that appetising.

But the two locations are amongst a number of unsavoury sounding places that tourists will head to in Europe this summer.

Hunt for Jordan Chandler who first accused Michael Jackson of abusing him as a child

A list of the most off-putting names for holiday spots has been put together by Monarch Holidays as Brits prepare to travel to the continent for some time off.

And if you can get past the odd-sounding names the chances are you'll have a great time at most of the destinations highlighted – and of course the obligatory road sign selfie.

Rottenegg, for instance, is ironically renowned for the quality of its air and offers a 360 degree view of the beautiful mountainous terrain surrounding it.

Boring is minutes from Denmark's cultural centre which has hosted concerts by the likes of Bob Dylan, Madonna and The Rolling Stones in recent years'

And the only thing off-putting about Nasty is the sky-high property prices due to its location as it is among rolling hills, stunning wildlife and thatched cottages of Hertfordshire.

Not making the list was Fucking in Austria, which attempted to change its name in 2012, and Twatt in the Shetlands.

Other notable place names to make the list include Piles in Spain, Windpassing in Austria and Bidet in France.

Richard Francis, managing director, Monarch Holidays, said: 'We can all be guilty of judging a book by its cover – or a place by its name.

'So as part of our Year of Nice campaign we have put together a full tour guide for inquisitive travellers that shines a light on some of these unfairly named locations.

'We've uncovered some real hidden gems not far from many of our popular destinations, which despite their deceptive names are some of the nicest places to visit in Europe.'

    Off-putting place names

    1. Rottenegg (Austria)2. Boring (Denmark)3. Nasty (Hertfordshire)4. El Morron (Spain)5. Reigny (France)6. Piles (Spain)7. Windpassing (Austria)8. Fail (Viseu, Portugal)9. Monster (Netherlands)10. It's also never been easier to get there – Brittany Ferries offer the widest choice of ferry crossings to France for those looking to take the ultimate road trip. But if you're unsure where to get started, check out any of these idyllic French destinations dotted along the west:

    Bayonne

bayonne-france 10 Beautiful Destinations in Western France You Can Reach By FerryIf you've decided to add Biarritz to your list, you might as well check out Bayonne while you're at it. Better yet, hire a bike for the day and explore one of the most stunning coastlines in Europe.

    Andernos-les-Bains

arcachon-bay-oysters 10 Beautiful Destinations in Western France You Can Reach By FerryThough largely overlooked by the usual tourist mobs, Andernos-les-Bains is known by the more discerning travellers as a t rue hidden gem. Into Burgundy via Cluny, Destination Cissey

The day looks much better this morning as we wake to the sounds of the rural countryside. Birds and tractors but no animals. The fields all around are full of maize and wheat. The pool looks inviting but the temperature hasn't quite got there yet, maybe later in the week. Unfortunately we won't be here. Our accommodation has only coffee making facilities so a fresh fruit breakfast is all we need after last night's fantastic meal. Our hosts go off to work leaving us to lock up. Trusting.

Our first stop today is the historic town of Cluny. Yesterday our brief visit confirmed it was a "must see" town. We didn't realize its importance in history until now. The abbey that once filled much of the town in the 11th century was the largest in Europe at the time, larger than St Peters in Rome. What is left is just a small reminder of its former glory. You get a sense of how big it was from the bases of the columns that have been uncovered. Inside part of the transept you get an i dea of how high the structure was. The abbey must have been incredible with all the

other related buildings around it. Unfortunately much of the abbey was destroyed during the French Revolution when locals could take the stone from the abbey to build their houses.

Climbing to the top of the Fromage Tower there are wonderful views across the town and surrounding countryside. A truly picturesque setting on this hot sunny day. In the distance there is a steady stream of fast trains heading either to Paris or Lyon. Has this town lived up to expectations? Definitely. We enjoyed a quiet Monday. What it must be like during a busy summer weekend we're not sure. The cost of parking was a surprise. The meter said one euro twenty for the hour. Pick your time and you get four and half hours for one euro. No fee is taken during the early afternoon.

Our time in Cluny is ending and we need to head to our destination, a small village 8 kilometres south-east of Beaune. Two years ago we made the decision to return. Today we return, this time for a week. A week might not be long enough. Perhaps next time it will be two weeks and that might not be long enough. Maybe

we need to buy a nice rural house surrounded by pinot noir grapes.

We arrive in this small rural village and follow the instructions on how to get into our apartment, one of three, in this delightful house. The afternoon is heating up. We worry because the house does not have air conditioning. We need not worry. Inside it is quite cool, some need to put on an extra layer. This renovated building was once a farmhouse with utility buildings, yet to be restored, attached to the back. Across the driveway is a working farm. We hope the rural odours don't filter through to our house. The owners have made a great job with a mix of French and English furniture, even a modern four-poster bed.

Parked in the car park is another car with a red number plate, not a Peugeot. We wonder who our neighbours are. Soon after settling in Ivan and Cathy from Santa Monica introduce themselves. They are finishing their three month holiday in their daughter's apartment next to ours. The area must be filled with ex-pats living it up in Burgundy.

After a quick visit to a supermarket in Beaune we settle

down for our first night in our new surroundings. We plan our week and prepare to soak up the atmosphere of this famous and much loved part of France.

    Tomorrow is a special day.
