Lufthansa grows its European Network with more destinations

It seems Lufthansa is looking beyond its traditional destinations in Europe to new destinations for the winter 2017/2018 season – with the announcement of three new routes from Frankfurt to short-medium haul destinations, and the conversion of three more routes into year-round operation.

Romanian destinations are in the spotlight, with the airline starting up services to Cluj and Timișoara. These services will be operated with an Embraer E-190 from Frankfurt on a daily basis.

Another new addition is Kuusamo in northern Finland, serving Lapland. This is very much one for the winter season, with a weekly flight on Saturdays only. Lead-in prices start at €199 one-way.

In terms of destinations that will convert to year-round operation, Reykjavik (Iceland), Palermo (Italy) and Santiago de Compostela (Spain). The revised operations look like this:

  • Reykjavik operates three times a week – Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays
  • Palermo will operate during the weekends twice a week – Saturday and Sundays
  • Santiago de Compostela will operate three times a week – Mondays, Thursdays and Friday
  • As we all know, choice and destinations are the name of the game as airlines seek to make money on new routes.

Whilst some of these are filled in routes, development of new routes should bring new flows of passengers.
