Where to meet that's half-way to Europe?

April 10, 2016, 12:15 a.m.

We'd like to meet up with our daughter who lives in Brussels. Can you recommend somewhere about halfway?

IN THE JULY SCHOOL HOLIDAYS WE WOULD LIKE TO MEET UP WITH OUR DAUGHTER WHO IS LIVING IN BRUSSELS. WE ARE TRYING TO FIND SOMEWHERE ABOUT HALFWAY BETWEEN SYDNEY AND BRUSSELS TO STAY FOR ABOUT A WEEK FOR MY HUSBAND AND MYSELF, MY DAUGHTER, WHO IS 18, AND SONS AGED 15 AND 16. LOOKING FOR SOMEWHERE REASONABLY PRICED.

South-east Asia is probably going to be the sweet spot, and there are plenty of destinations that qualify, depending on what your priorities are, but I would imagine warmth and relaxation are high on the wish list. Rather than a couple of hotel rooms a villa might be the go, and Koh Samui could work well. The Thai island has good air connections for you all via Bangkok and a villa in the $1500-$2000 price range for the week would probably fit your needs. For that you'd get a three to four-bedroom villa with a pool  in a lush garden within a private compound. You'll also get a full kitchen and this would allow you to have some meals together and save, although eating out is not a major expense in Thailand. Many of these villas are located in resort communities with central management.  In some cases they can arrange car hire, tours, massages and even cooks for villa guests. Check Airbnb https://www.airbnb.com.au/ for possibilities.

If you're looking for more of a cultural interlude then Siem Reap, gateway to Angkor, could be a good choice. A week would probably be too long but you could team it up with Kep, a former French colonial beach resort in the south of the country.
