Which Destinations the Citizens of BiH chose for New Year?

dubaiAccording to the leading tourist agencies in BiH, citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina were especially interested in welcoming the New Year in Dubai, the Maldives, Venice, and Tuscany.

This year Bosnians and Herzegovinians expressed less interest for arrangement in the neighboring Croatia, i.e. on the Adriatic Sea.

Tourist Agency Relax Tours stated that their most expensive arrangement for New Year was Dubai and that it was the first arrangement that was sold out.

"We could have taken an entire plane because a lot of people were interested in that destination. The group that left yesterday is already in Dubai," stated Relax Tours.

Citizens of BiH were also interested in destinations such as Istanbul, Vienna, and Rome.

Tourist Agency Sol Azur stated that the cheapest options like Venice, Vienna and Budapest, whose price ranges from 200 to 500 BAM, were sold out first.

Sol Azur also added that there was a lot of interest in Sicily, as well as in other European destinations like Istanbul, Paris, Vienna, and Budapest.

Ventura Travel Agency stated that the interest of citizens in celebrating New Year outside BiH is the same like last year and that this agency had 16 destinations in their offer. Among exotic destinations they highlight Dubai and the Maldives, and from European destinations there are Paris, Budapest, Vienna, Milano, Rome, Venice, Prague and Tuscany.

This agency sent more than 700 citizens of BIH to destinations across the globe. Young people were especially interested in celebrating New Year in Budva or Belgrade.

A significant number of citizens left to Dubai or the Maldives because of nice temperatures that amount to around 25 degrees. Those are mostly citizens of BiH who took a vacation, taking into consideration the length of the arrangement, to spend a New Year in exotic destinations.

Newcastle rated top stag and hen night destination in Europe

Newcastle has become the most popular destination in Europe for both stag and hen nights, according to a company dedicated to pre-wedding trips.

Tyneside-based Last Night of Freedom - which arranges stag and hen nights in more than 60 cities around the world - has been compiling a list of its most popular destinations since the turn of the century, with cosmopolitan European cities including Prague, Riga and Barcelona topping the list in previous years.

Newcastle topped the list for brides-to-be in 2015 and now has been joined as the leading stag destination too, with the city's vibrant nightlife, shopping and architecture being said to be attracting tourists from around the UK.

Revellers on hen and stag nights contribute millions to the city's economy each year, though concerns have been expressed previously that rowdy pre-wedding parties are deterring other people from going out in Newcastle's city centre at weekends.

The city has been in Last Night of Freedom's Top 10 destinations for both stag and hen weekends every year since the turn of the century, rising from seventh in 2000 to take top spot in 2016 while former top destinations including Nottingham and Bournemouth have seen their popularity plummet.

Matt Mavir, managing director of Last Night of Freedom, said: "It's great to see Newcastle as the number one choice when it comes to celebrating last nights of freedom.

"For us to be at the centre of the most popular stag and hen do location in the world is pretty special. We think it's a great city, and it's brilliant to see our customers agree."

Matt Mavir, managing director of Last Night of Freedom, based in Gateshead

In 2016, Newcastle was the most popular destination for stag nights ahead of Prague, Budapest and Dublin. For hen nights, the city took the top spot ahead of Dublin, London and Edinburgh.

Meanwhile, the North East is also proving popular for its more sedate attractions, with a company specialising in country cottages in Northumberland seeing a surge in interest in both rentals and purchases from people in London and the South East.

Cottages in Northumberland saw a 19% increase in London bookings and has also been approached by people in the capital wanting to buy property in the county.

The company's operations director Angela Mazingham said: "In many ways Northumberland is the perfect antidote to life in the capital and the feedback we're receiving from visitors bears that out.

"Obviously the clean air, the beaches and the combination of good countryside and interesting heritage sites play a huge part in the county's appeal to city dwellers.

"But what many are also commenting on is the quality of the restaurants and local produce here. When they come on holiday they want to enjoy the same lifestyle standards as they do at home – and Northumberland provides them.

"We have also been approached by several London visitors who are now keen to invest in properties in the North East with a view to letting them out to other holidaymakers."

Jude Leitch, director of Northumberland Tourism, said: "We are seeing an increase in the number of visitors from the south and even more encouragingly, all year round.

"The dark skies of the International Dark Skies Park and throughout the whole of Northumberland, means that people visiting from city areas can experience the joys of the night skies that our lucky residents enjoy every night."

Zim named best tourism destination in 2017

AN American luxury and lifestyle travel magazine, Condé Nast Traveler, has named Zimbabwe the best destination for travellers to Africa in 2017.

Zimbabwe was ranked number 13 globally and Rwanda 14.

Condé Nast Traveler named these two African countries on its "Best Places to Travel in 2017".

According to the magazine's website: "A new $150 million airport in Victoria Falls, capable of welcoming 1,5 million people a year aboard massive passenger jets, is only one of several reasons why Zimbabwe is on our 2017 list.

"The country is building up its tourism infrastructure despite and, sometimes, in spite of — years of economic downturn. The same resilience is on show in the country's conservation efforts; there's been a clampdown on poaching and biodiversity flourishes in Hwange National Park, the country's largest game reserve."

Condé Nast Traveler added: "While everyone's booking stays in the safari parks of Kenya, Tanzania, Botswana, and South Africa, we recommend scouting for the Big Five in much less-crowded (and often more affordable) Zimbabwe. A new under $1 000 eight-night safari by Gecko Adventures, launching in the spring, will take you from Victoria Falls, through Hwange and into South Africa's Limpopo province, making it possible to see the best of the country in a single stretch."

Rwanda made it to the list because "of one of the most anticipated hotel openings on the continent."

In June 2017, Condé Nast Traveler said, "Wilderness Safaris' Bisate Lodge will open in an eroded volcanic cone, just a short drive to the entrance of Volcanoes National Park, where visitors can see the critically endangered mountain gorilla.

"It is also a prime example of a safari lodge making a firm commitment to conservation and community development. The hotel will have its own cooperative farm, tree plantation, and a number of educational initiatives around protecting endangered species."

Rwanda was also picked because of the safety and cleanness of Kigali, the capital city.

Canada tops Condé Nast Traveler's 17 best places to visit in 2017 because its "cities are truly having a moment".

Montreal is redefining itself as a food city worth the flight.

Toronto is taking the Iceland approach and encouraging travellers to extend their layover via Air Canada's new free up-to-seven-day stay.

Zimbabwe was recently awarded the 2014 World Best Tourist Destination title by the European Union Council on Tourism and Trade (ECTT) for promoting eco-tourism and successfully convening the 20th session of the World Tourism Organisation General Assembly conference in 2013.

The council named Zimbabwe as the World Best Tourist Destination for 2014 and receiver of the Favourite Cultural Destination distinction for 2014 despite economic challenges it is facing.

Minnesotans flock to Thunder Bay to fly overseas

Schmidtke, who runs the Thunder Bay, Ontario, airport, said there's been a noticeable rush of Minnesotans driving north this year to save money on airline flights to Europe and other international destinations.

The airlines won't share actual passenger data with Schmidtke, but he said his staff counted 50 percent more U.S. license plates in the airport parking lot in 2016 compared to 2015, helping push the airport to its busiest summer ever.

He expects the trend to continue this winter as Northlanders begin to book trips to warm weather destinations.

"The big draw over the summer was Europe, because Air Canada really does Europe well,'' Schmidtke said. "People were saving $400 or $500 per ticket by driving here and flying to Europe through Toronto rather than driving to Minneapolis and flying out of there."

Schmidtke said he's also compared winter vacation package deals to places like Cancun and Punta Cana, Mexico, "and found the same $400 and $500 difference."

But is it worth the extra hour drive from Duluth to Thunder Bay rather than driving to Minneapolis? That depends on how much money "worth it'' is for you.

A News Tribune online search on Friday found the price difference has narrowed since summer months but that tickets to several international destinations still are cheaper from Thunder Bay than from Minneapolis or Duluth. Air Canada to Paris was $150 less round trip from Thunder Bay than Delta from Minneapolis for a round-trip ticket leaving Jan. 11 and returning Jan. 25. Thunder Bay to London was $265 cheaper for the same dates, and Thunder Bay to Tokyo was more than $300 cheaper than Minneapolis to Tokyo.

A weeklong airfare and hotel package trip to Cancun was more than $400 less through sunwing.ca from Thunder Bay than at suncountry.com from Minneapolis, according to a News Tribune search.

It should be noted that online ticket prices change often, even within a 24-hour period.

Heidi Willeck of Cloquet traveled to Ireland in June for a wedding and said she and her boyfriend saved about $300 per ticket compared to flying out of Minneapolis or Duluth. The trip — from Thunder Bay to Toronto to London to Dublin — had an extra stop, but was well worth the drive north.

"We actually had a big group go over, about 20 of us, and we all went out of Thunder Bay,'' she said. "We have a friend who lives up there, so that helped save a little more (parking) money. But the (airfare) savings was pretty substantial."

Part of the phenomenon can be explained by competition in the Thunder Bay market. Three airlines — Air Canada, Westjet and Porter Airlines — now combine for 16 flights daily to Toronto, a busy international hub airport with direct flights to many overseas cities, said Schmidtke, CEO of the Thunder Bay Airport Authority. Added capacity in a market, more seats on more planes, often results in cheaper fares, he noted.

Add in a strong U.S. dollar — worth about $1.35 in Canada as of Monday — and the price differential continues to widen.

Moreover, travelers heading overseas already have the passport necessary to drive back and forth across the border to Canada.

"Most of the (U.S. traffic) is from Minnesota. But our favorite story is a Wisconsin family from Eau Claire,'' Schmidtke said. "Four of them were going to Spain for a wedding, and they found it considerably less expensive to fly out of Thunder Bay than Chicago, which is about the same distance from Eau Claire."

Some U.S. passengers without friends in Thunder Bay are leaving their vehicles at the airport parking lot during their trips or opting to spend a night at a Thunder Bay hotel and taking hotel shuttles to the airport.

"We saw a noticeable trend of U.S. guests parking here, staying the night and doing our park-and-fly option,'' said Laurie Hoskins, director of marketing at Thunder Bay's Valhalla Inn. "We had a very busy summer in general, and I think that was a good part of it. We obviously don't ask people where they are going. But it was mostly Europe, from what people did tell us."

Natalie Peterson, spokeswoman for the Duluth Airport Authority, said her agency has not seen any data that shows Northlanders flying out of Thunder Bay at any major level. Most Duluth-area passengers who don't fly out of Duluth fly out of Minneapolis-St. Paul, she said.

Many Northlanders remain loyal to Delta, which acquired Minnesota-based Northwest Airlines a decade ago, she noted, and Delta doesn't fly out of Thunder Bay.

"Our data shows that, if we have leakage, it's to MSP. We just aren't seeing anything with Thunder Bay,'' she said. "Most people just aren't going to drive four hours into Canada to fly."

Peterson noted that, over the long term, international flights booked out of Duluth are often as cheap or even cheaper than flying out of other airports.

Duluth travel agents interviewed say they haven't used Thunder Bay much when booking their customers' overseas flights, saying they try to search for the least expensive fares out of Duluth — if their clients are flexible in what days they can travel.

Jennifer Maki at Duluth's Divine Destinations said she has sent some travelers through Toronto on their way to popular destinations at peak seasons, when comparable U.S. routes are full.

"It's an interesting concept and when it works, it works well. But to be honest, it's not always the best choice,'' Maki said of the Canadian option. "We are lucky to have two great carriers here in Duluth, United and Delta, who can get us to anywhere in the world as it is. I've found that most people don't even know how affordable flying from Duluth can be. ... A few weeks ago I found tickets to Mexico 50 cents more out of Duluth than Minneapolis. It pays to look."

Maki also cautioned international travelers about online, cut-rate fares that are not refundable or exchangeable if weather while driving to a faraway airport forces travelers to miss a flight. Travel agents often can help solve that problem with tickets they book, she notes, by changing itineraries even at the last minute.

Fresh from the success of their recent opening in Barcelona, Soho House are to unveil their latest venture, the Beach House, at the pretty little bay of Garraf in spring 2017. Carles Abellan is another chef to change the face of gastronomy in Barcelona. His Michelin-starred Comerç 24 is now closed, but his other ventures range from haute cuisine to a beach shack. The latest is La Barra, slated to open in February, in which diners will sit up at a bar and eat traditional 'fishermen's dishes', in spirit with the maritime neighbourhood of Barceloneta.

5. Casa Vicens

www.casavicens.es

Gaudí's stunning Casa Vicens was his first major work, carried out in 1888. It sits on a quiet Gràcia back-street, where its geometrical Mudéjar-influenced façade and fantastical wrought-iron gates are strangely undervisited. It's a private residence, but from October 2017 will open its doors to the public for the first time.

Marriott Hotels are to open their third Edition hotel in Barcelona in mid 2017. A purpose-built edifice, with interiors by the city's most sought-after designer, Lázaro Rosa-Violán, it will sit alongside the Born's Santa Caterina market. The market, designed by the late Enric Miralles, is famous for its Gaudiesque roof, only really visible from neighbouring apartment blocks – until now.

7. The Pillars of Europe: The Middle Ages

8. Festes de Gràcia

9. Casa de les Punxes/150th anniversary of Puig I Cadafalch

www.casadelespunxes.com

The city has named 2017 'Year of Puig i Cadafalch' to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the architect's birth. One of Gaudí's contemporaries, he's inevitably been overshadowed by the master, but has some stunning buildings around town, one of which – the Casa de les Punxes – has just opened to the public for the first time.

10. Museu Marítim

www.mmb.cat

After a renovation that has lasted several years, the wonderful Museu Marítim is finally fully reopening to the public in 2017. It is housed under the Catalan Gothic arches of the medieval shipyards, and the building is worth a visit in itself, but the collection of all things nautical is fascinating. A highlight is the huge replica of Don Juan de Austria's 16th-century galley.

Oscar's move to Shanghai SIPG jersey won't go down in history as one of the most sensational transfers. For, it neither had a manager kicking the player out nor did it involve an astronomical sum at the end of a bidding war.

Yet the Brazilian playmaker's 52 million pound move to China could be the beginning of the end of Europe's tag as a footballer's dream destination. With the Chinese Super League announcing its intention to become one of world's best leagues by signing some of World's coveted talents, Europe now faces stiff competition for football stars -- especially from South America and Asia.

The signs were already there. Last season, the Asian football markets saw records being shattered with the arrivals of Jackson Martinez (Guangzhou Evergrande Taobao), Ezequiel Lavezzi (Hebei China Fortune), Ramires (Jiangsu Suning) and Alex Teixeira (Jiangsu Suning). These players were in the peak of their careers unlike Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka who took the Asian route for one last fat pay cheque before they hang up their boots. Europe didn't mind the Drogbas and Anelkas moving because it was helping them clear out players on the decline without upsetting the fans who don't like it when their heroes aren't offered contract extensions. But Jaingsu secured the services of 25-year-old Teixeira by outbidding Liverpool -- a team with a rich pedigree in Europe. Oscar was, until very recently, a primary target for Serie A champion Juventus.

Suddenly the Chinese are taking away Europe's primary targets. China's financial power, aided by President Xi Jingping's 50-point plan for football domination, in due course, will end the traditional cycle of football economy.

There are four types of clubs:

1. The nursery: Clubs such as Spain's Athletic Bilbao and England's Southampton identify talented players at a very young age and help them become top-class footballers. Their success lies on a continuous supply of young, quality footballers and big clubs buying them for a huge sum.

2. The scouts: Some clubs may not have a bright academy but they make up for it by scouting talent across the world. They take the gamble with young players. For the players, the clubs are guaranteed spotlights -- if they perform well, the big guns will come looking. For the clubs, if the gamble pays off, it's a lot of profit.

3. Title chasers: The demands of a cup every single season means most clubs like to buy proven talent. They tend to buy from clubs in established leagues rather than taking a risk of signing them young.

4. The final stage: The Major League Soccer (MLS) and the Indian Super League (ISL) have clubs that offer top-players one last fat pay cheque before they retire. For the players, the money is huge and the football isn't too demanding. The clubs, in turn, make the most of the players' marketability through jersey and ticket sales.

The Chinese clubs, much to the unhappiness of Europe, have entered the 'title-chasers' category rather 'final stage'. Suddenly, 'the nursery' and 'the scouts' have an alternative option to sell their players, which will give them leverage while negotiating. Liverpool desperately wanted Teixeira, but Shakhtar Donetsk, would not fudge until the Reds matched the Chinese bid. Moreover, the money going into these smaller clubs will allow them to fend off approaches from top clubs.

The EPL, buoyed by a new TV rights deal, is an example of how money can level the playing field. Traditional buyers like Chelsea and Manchester City will struggle to sign a player from Southampton today because of the money the Saints are getting from the deal (which is close to what top clubs from other European clubs make). This hinders top clubs' attempts to buy off competition.

If Chinese Super League continues its trend, and one would assume that will be the case, then the likes of Atletico Madrid, Sevilla, and Borussia Dortmund will have the financial security to say no to approaches from teams in the same league.

That said, the Chinese market is insurance for the big clubs, who are bound by the financial fair play (FFP) regulations. Take the case of Oscar. Chelsea bought the Brazilian from Internacional for his potential. Though he didn't exactly flop, he never rose to the levels that were expected of him and was only a bench-warmer in Antonio Conte's team. It was a gamble that didn't pay off for Chelsea. That is until CSL took him in and handed Chelsea a whopping 40 million profit.

The big clubs now have the safety of not losing money on risky moves which will push them to scout talents rather than rely on other scouting clubs. If Gabriel Jesus turns out to be a flop at Manchester City, it won't worry the City owners too much because CSL would love to get a young player of his quality.

Acquiring players from big clubs is good for China too. Oscar still has the best part of his career ahead of him and is more marketable than a player bought from Shakhtar because of Chelsea's fan base. This will disrupt the functioning of traditional scouting clubs who will have the likes of Real Madrid and Chelsea breathing down their necks.

China is using the same method that saw its rapid rise in industrial sectors -- acquiring foreign talent to improve itself. Atletico Madrid is partly owned by Chinese billionaire Wang Jianlin while Manchester City in 2015 announced a 265 million pound deal with Chinese investors. With President Xi's dream of turning China into a 'soccer powerhouse' very much a priority, rich offers from the oriental east will not be short at least for the immediate future.

Chinese Football League promises to shake up football's existing financial system and throw open a plethora of opportunities and difficulties to clubs in Europe. Only thing is missing in China's top league today -- the presence of a European football star. In the summer of 2017, this could change, with Wayne Rooney and John Terry being targeted. Will they change the power structure in football forever by moving to China? Only time will tell.

European supervolcano may be active again

A long-dormant supervolcano beneath the city of Naples, Italy, is showing signs of life,  a recent study in the journal Nature Communications reports.

The volcanic area — known as Campi Flegrei — is a large mix of steam, boiling mud, and smaller volcanoes that have sat dormant for hundreds of years. While the geological structure has become a popular tourist destination, in recent years the fiery formation has shown signs of activity — so much so, that a team of Italian researchers believes it may erupt once again.

Since 2005, the volcano has been undergoing uplift caused by phenomena known as "bradyseisms," — in which the surface of the volcano gets pushed up by magma underneath it. This process has allowed researchers to figure out the eruption threshold of the gases and fluids within the craters.

"Hydrothermal rocks, if heated, can ultimately lose their mechanical resistance, causing an acceleration towards critical conditions," said lead author Giovanni Chiodini, a researcher at Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology in Bologna, according to The Christian Science Monitor.

Campi Flegrei last erupted in 1538. Then, it expelled so much material, it created a brand new mountain known as Monte Nuovo. However, its biggest eruption occurred almost 40,000 years ago. That blast was so large it may have led to a volcanic winter that contributed to the demise of the Neanderthals.

While a modern explosion would likely not be as big as past events, it would still threaten some 500,000 people that live around the area.

While the study is concerning, researchers say that there is still a lot of uncertainty. Volcanic eruptions are very hard to predict because volcanoes' active lifespans go back hundreds of thousands of years and involve processes that occur deep underground. So there is a chance that Campi Flegrei could fizzle out before reaching maximum pressure.

"In general, unfortunately, volcanology is not a precise science," Chiodini wrote to The Washington Post. "We have many uncertainties and long-term provisions are at the moment not possible! For example, the process that we describe could evolve in both directions: toward pre-eruptive conditions or to the finish of the volcanic unrest."

Even so, there is enough activity at the site that researchers believe it is important to watch the volcano's activity carefully in the coming weeks.

Three Peaceful Macedonian Destinations to Visit in 2017

Macedonia is breathtaking, fascinating, full of Old World charm. Adventure off-the-beaten-path to discover its untamed nature that cradles peaceful hamlets where time doesn't follow the rush of the modern society. Spend a couple of halcyon days in this Eastern European country to escape the stressful, mundane routines that keep you busy elsewhere in the world.

    1. Hike the Polog Valley

The Polog valley is one of those idyllic places that inspire writers and artists. It is a paradise at the foothills of the Šar Mountains. The largest urban area here is the city of Gostivar, which is charming and has several mosques, monuments, quaint cafes, and shops. Admire its landmark clock tower in the center, and visit the cathedral – you cannot miss it as it dominates the main square. If you choose Gostivar for your Macedonian vacation, stay at Hotel Radika, a five-star resort with spa and all the luxury you need to feel like royalty, where standard rooms are priced lower than 50 € per night, and the Baroque Presidential suite looks like a Hollywood setting. Radika is not in Gostivar, but in the National Park Mavrovo, just above the Mavrovo Lake, in a forested natural environment, at 1400m altitude. It is popular in winter for skiing, but it is also a great summer destination, as the area offers excellent opportunities for outdoor activities.

    Hotel Radika

Explore the area and hike along the Vardar to Vrutok – it's a two-hour hike from Gostivar, but you'll have to drive if you stay at Radika. Here, stop at Burimi Tre fish restaurant, which is by the water, and have a traditional dish and a glass of Macedonian wine. The Vardar originates in Vrutok, then flows for 388 km till it meets the Aegean Sea, at Thessaloniki in Greece.

    2. Healing Waters, the SPAs of Debar

Debar is another destination that is not yet invaded by tourist crowds, although it is well worth it. CAPA's spas here are well known among the locals and attract tourists from neighboring countries too. Banisht is the oldest hotel in the region and enjoys a stunning location at 880 m altitude. It is surrounded by forests and rich vegetation and offers luxury accommodation, relaxing gardens, indoor pools, spa and wellness center, and much more. But Capa's second address, Kosovrast, is even better. It's a rather romantic destination overlooking Lake Debar. They have indoor pools as well, and spa treatments with thermal water are offered, alongside traditional therapies like massages, hydrotherapy, electrotherapy, and so on. Talk to them about excursions and walks in the area too.

    Banjat e Dibres Capa

Debar stands about 620 m above the sea level and is surrounded by Macedonia's striking Dešat, Stogovo, Jablanica and Bistra mountains. Visit the mosque of Debar if you are in the area. The church and monastery St. George the Victorious is worthy of a stop too. It is a historic attraction from 1835, with a beautiful garden, perfect to spend a few moments of peace and solitude. Some amazing frescoes decorate the walls of the church.

    3. See the Living Museum in Kratovo

They know where to build their towns in Macedonia! A living museum by all definitions of the term, Kratovo enjoys the natural bounty of the western slopes of Mount Osogovo. The area has been inhabited since Roman times, but the only indications of a settlement here come from the Zdravče kamen hill above the town. Remarkably, the town was better known in the Middle Ages for its literary school. A visit to the Museum of Kratov is just what you need if you are interested in heritage and culture. There are also several Orthodox churches worthy of attention, including the Church of St. Nicholas the Miracle Worker, the Church of St. John the Baptist, and the Church of St. George of Kratovo in the old cemetery. The town is also known for its towers and bridges, and if you look at the traditional homes of Kratovo, you will notice that most of them have verandas, which is a particular architectural trait in this region. If you visit Kratovo, take time to see the archeological site Golemo Gradiste, a fortified settlement from the late ancient times and the Middle Ages or the "Stone Dolls" of Kuklica, which are natural formations, on the right bank of the Kriva River valley. The pillars are a natural occurrence caused by prolonged erosion of volcanic rocks, still they are quite a sight. Don't forget your camera!

54% of European businesses see Brexit as a threat to European business community

The research asked almost 700 of Europe's successful business leaders their views on Brexit. 41 per cent think that the UK is now a less attractive investment destination and 54 per cent believe Brexit poses a threat, compared to 39 per cent who see it as an opportunity.

Three months ahead of the government's plan to invoke article 50, 14 per cent of European businesses are already feeling the effects of Brexit, with twice as many expecting to be affected once the separation is complete.

European businesses are most concerned about increases to their cost base. Of those European businesses who will be affected by the vote to leave the EU, 58 per cent expect the cost of doing business to rise and 50 per cent expect a hit on their bottom line. Moreover, these businesses are concerned about the effect the Brexit vote will have on their suppliers, with 42 per cent expecting it to have a negative impact in the years to come.

As Theresa May prepares to publish her Brexit plans, European firms with UK operations are calling on the two sides to come to an agreement on the single market. Continued access to the single market is the number one priority for European firms with operations in the UK, followed by tax incentives and free movement of labour.

Which aspect of the Brexit negotiation is most important to European businesses with UK operations?

    Single Market Access

    29%

    Tax breaks

    22%

    Free movement of labour

    22%

    Tariff levels

    21%

Anand Selvarajan, Regional Leader for Europe, RSM International, commented: "The UK's decision to leave the EU is not just a challenge for British businesses but for companies across Europe, uncertain about what Brexit means for their international ambitions.

It is vital, in this period of uncertainty, that businesses focus and prepare for the future based on the emerging facts and are not paralysed by the countless doomsday theories out there. Trade will continue and businesses need to be agile in responding to the evolving political and economic landscape."

European businesses are more despondent when it comes to the impact on the UK. 58 per cent believe Brexit poses a threat to UK businesses with 41 per cent of European businesses saying the UK is now a less attractive destination for investment, compared to 35 per cent who do not.

Indeed 25 per cent of respondents who intended to invest in the UK reported that the decision is now under review, with 9 per cent saying they have been approached by organisations looking to attract investment into other EU states following the UK's decision to leave.

Adrian Tripp, CEO, European Business Awards said: "Surveys conducted both before and after the referendum show us the continuing belief of many European businesses that Brexit has made the UK a less attractive place to do business. To stop this becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy the UK Government needs to get an agreement in place with the EU as soon as possible."

Azerbaijan to increase flight destinations up to 100

    19 December 2016 16:31 (UTC+04:00)

    By Amina Nazarli

Azerbaijan, one of the leaders of the aviation community of the CIS countries, plans to fly to more destinations until 2025.

The country is going to launch direct flights to 100 major European cities until 2025 as it will realize the "Strategic Road Map on the national economy and main economic sectors".

One of the key priorities set by the Strategic Road Map is increasing the number of direct flights between Baku and major European cities from 49 to 100.

Moreover, it is planned to raise the number of low-cost charter flights in winter and summer seasons with the aim of boosting tourist flow.

Azerbaijan Airlines, AZAL, is the national flag carrier operating flights to destinations across Asia, the CIS, Europe and the USA.

Staring last year AZAL provided its passengers with low-cost flights. The tickets (including all dues) for these flights cost 99 euros one way if purchased through the AZAL website and the airline ticket offices.

Flights to 13 popular destinations are operated under AZALJET brand since March 2016. Sales and flight scheme on these flights is close to low-cost airlines, that is, passengers have a choice of several services in the form of paid options.

Meanwhile, AZAL plans to establish a national low-cost carrier BUTA AIRWAYS. The airway, which is expected to begin flights in autumn 2017, will have its own fleet on the basis of Embraer aircrafts in its own livery, its own staff and independent tariff policy.

Earlier in September Azerbaijan was listed among the countries with the lowest prices on domestic and international flights, the Daily Mail reported with reference to the Kiwi.com travel service.

The country was ranked the 8th in the list of international flights charging an average of $3.02 per 100 km, while its legacy airlines cost is $6.25 per 100 km.

John Obi Mikel will surely leave Chelsea in the next transfer window. However, the destination of the Nigerian midfielder is still unknown.

Gernot Rohr, the Super Eagles' coach, seems to have a clearer idea of the player's next club. In an interview with "Europe 1", Rohr said: "I've recently met Mikel in London. He's in advanced negotiations with Marseille. For him, it remains a serious option".

The 29-year-old player didn't make many appearances under Antonio Conte this season. Mikel has been regularly playing with the Blues since 2006 but his adventure has apparently come to its end.

Underexplored European Countries You’ll Want to Add to Your Next Trip

Okay, let's face it: Europe isn't exactly an unknown destination for travelers. For its relatively small size, it has a tantalizing mix of great architecture, yummy food, and natural beauty. It really is no wonder that many decide to make the trip over. However, the crowds can be enough to dissuade any would-be visitor. Paris is the most visited city on Earth. It's hard to take a selfie without anyone in the background in Venice. Good luck getting a moment alone in London!

If you're planning an epic trip around the continent, why not try veering away from the usual suspects? I'm not telling you to avoid the crowd favorites – they're popular for a reason – but by deciding to visit other parts of Europe, you'll have an experience that'll definitely differ from the tried and tested! Here are some suggestions for you to consider:

    #8. Liechtenstein

Tiny Liechtenstein has less than 40,000 people, but is home to amazing mountain views. Its capital of Vaduz has a lovely castle, a highlight of visitors to the principality. If you'd like to do some cycling or hiking without the crowds, then this country may be just what you're looking for. Liechtenstein is a great stop for those who have just come from Switzerland, as it uses the same currency. If you'd also like to get the country's "passport stamp", then go for it. After all, how many people have been to Liechtenstein?

    #7. Slovenia

Despite its small size, Slovenia offers would-be visitors anything they could ever wish for – mountains that offer wonderful skiing, beaches to enjoy, and incredible architecture to gawk at. Half of Slovenia is still forested, showing its commitment to preserving natural resources. Have coffee at one of Ljubljana's cafes as you gaze up at its imposing castle, looming over the Slovenian capital. Visit the caves the country is famous for, Postojna and Škocjan – the latter is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Don't forget to stop by Bled its gorgeous lake, cliff side castle, and picturesque island church are second to none.

    #6. Serbia

Serbia holds a lot of history – its capital, Belgrade, used to be the capital of Yugoslavia. Its former leader, Tito, is also buried here. You'll be impressed by Belgrade's nightlife, which comes at a fraction of the cost of Western Europe. Did you know that the famous scientist, Nikola Tesla, was Serbian? He doesn't only have a museum dedicated to him here – he's also found on their 100 dinar bill. Visit the Hungarian-influenced region of Vojvodina, with the border town of Subotica displaying gorgeous art nouveau buildings. If you're ready to head down south, stop by Niš, the birthplace of the Roman Emperor Constantine. Serbia is definitely worthy of your time!

    #5. Ukraine

One of Europe's largest countries is, ironically, underexplored. It hasn't been getting a lot of great praise in the media, but Ukraine will leave visitors spellbound. Brush up on you r Cyrillic before you visit – it'll be a fun adventure as you try to decipher signs. The Ukrainian capital of Kiev is stunning, with its beautiful churches and stately buildings. Maybe you want to take a day trip to Chernobyl, infamous for the nuclear disaster decades ago. You'll wonder if you're still in Ukraine if you pop by beautiful Lviv, which has all the charm of central Europe, but almost no tourists. Don't forget to try some borscht, the national soup!

    #4. Hungary

If you'd like a linguistic challenge, you might want to visit Hungary. Their language is pretty much unrelated to the country's neighbors! If you're wondering whether crossing the border from Austria was worth it, the sight of the Hungarian capital's numerous bridges, which connect Buda to Pest over the Danube River, will give you the answer. You may also want to take a trip to Eger, home of the famous Bull's Blood wine. How about taking a dip in Lake Balaton, or what locals refer to as the "Hungarian sea"? Don't forget to hop on Budapest's Metro 1 – it's the oldest metro system in continental Europe.

    #3. Lithuania

The southernmost of the Baltic States holds many delights for travelers who make the trip. Its capital, Vilnius, is chock full of lovely baroque architecture. Don't forget to drop by the self-declared "Republic" of Užupis, home to great cafes and artists. Read up on their constitution, translated into several languages. Trakai Castle is also worth visiting; it's picturesque and an easy day trip from Vilnius. Why not stop by the Hill of Crosses? There are thousands of them, in different shapes and sizes. It's not something you see every day!

    #2. Albania

If you enjoy mountain scenery, Albania will take your breath away. If you love to soak up the sun, this country's beaches will have half the crowds compared to neighboring Greece. Tirana's National History Museum will show you a lot of artifacts from Albania's past as pa rt of the Roman Empire. If you're looking for something a little more recent, don't forget to drop by the UNESCO-listed Ottoman towns of Berat and Gjirokastra. Berat, the "town of a thousand windows", has a museum that showcases typical Ottoman life in the 18th century. Gjirokastra, on the other hand, is home to one of the biggest castles in the Balkans. Now is the time to visit Albania, before everyone finds out how wonderful it is.

    #1. Malta

If you're asking yourself if Malta is worth the extra flight or ferry ride, the short answer is yes. You'll constantly see the intermingling of outside influences on Malta. From neighboring Italy, to northern Africa, to the United Kingdom – all of them have made Maltese culture and architecture unique. Plan visits to prehistoric wonders like the Hypogeum, made up of burial chambers carved entirely out of rock. See proof of how Malta is predominantly Catholic through its numerous cathedrals and festas. Love the water? You'r e never too far from it in Malta. Don't forget to visit the set of the live-action movie Popeye – both children and kids at heart will love it!

Terror fear weakens tourist arrivals in Europe

    paris security

The latest results from the Air Travellers' Traffic Barometer* produced by European Cities Marketing and ForwardKeys highlight that terror fear is still weakening arrivals in Europe for Q3 2016.

International travels dropped by -3.5% while the long haul segment (excluding intra-European flows) remains resilient, slightly decreasing by -0.3%. This stabilisation of the long haul segment is mainly due to the increase in travellers from the Americas and Middle East.

As a result of the visa exemption for some countries in Latin America such as Colombia and Peru, Central & South America regions rose slightly by 0.5 %. The Middle East was impacted by the Ramadan timing effect. Asia and Oceania shrank by -3.3%, likely due to growing alternative destinations to Europe and Japanese travellers concerned about European safety.

Long haul travellers top growing destinations are mainly cities of the Iberian Peninsula, but German cities are also generating interest

Six cities of the Iberian Peninsula - Valencia, Seville, Barcelona, Madrid, Mallorca and Lisbon - were among the top 10 growing destinations. The steady growths of Barcelona (+9.5%) and Madrid (+8.5%) are noticeable by the fact that they are already among the group of most relevant destinations in terms of volume. Hamburg (+11.4%) and Berlin (+6.5%) demonstrate the interest that German cities are generating.

International bookings to Europe see recovery in Q4 2016 compared to previous year

International bookings for arrivals in Q4 2016 as of September 30th are down -1.7%. It's better than the previous quarter, the Intra European travellers being less negative this time. The Asia & Oceania region is down by -5.5% impacted by the Japanese. North America is slowing down but remains positive.

As expected, the post-referendum and cheaper British pound boosted London as a key European destination. The slight decline of -0.6% is an improvement when compared with previous reports. Northern Europe and South-Western Europe, along with Dubrovnik, are the fastest growing booking areas. Safety is one of the strongest prerequisites that travellers demand and the rest of Europe is being affected by the fear of terrorism.

Dreaming of holidays and triathlon in 2017?

Everyone loves a holiday. Why not treat yourself this Festive Season by booking a triathlon trip for 2017?

If you're competing in one of the ETU European Championship events in 2017, the race itself doesn't have to be the only reason for your trip. Nirvana, British Triathlon's Official Age-Group Travel Suppliers, have given us the lowdown on some of the top European destinations on offer next year.

Book your trip with Nirvana Europe here, and get the best accommodation and event travel services available.

A small town nestled in the Estonian valleys, Otepaa is a popular winter holiday destination, especially for winter sports enthusiasts. That's exactly why athletes competing at the 2017 Otepää ETU Winter Triathlon European Championships couldn't have asked for a better event location, and have every reason to be excited about the trip.

Located in Soria in northern Spain, the ETU Duathlon European Championships courses (sprint & standard distances) are surrounded by some of the country's most outstanding scenic and historical attractions, including the Cañón del Río Lobos Nature Reserve and the 12th century San Juan de Rabanera church. The courses run through the heart of the city itself, and there are regular train and bus services available for athletes and spectators wishing to visit neighbouring Madrid in the days surrounding the race.

As one of many cities through which Europe's second-longest river flows, Bratislava in Slovakia is the ideal setting for the 2017 ETU Aquathlon European Championships. Athletes will have the unmissable opportunity to swim the magnificent Danube river.

The Danish city of Herning is no stranger to triathlon championship events and promises a high-quality course for athletes competing in the 2017 ETU Challenge Middle Distance Triathlon European Championships. Participants will swim in Herning's beautiful Lake Fuglsang and bike through the area's stunning natural surroundings before finishing on foot in the city square.

Set against the glorious backdrop of Dusseldorf's Media Harbour, the 2017 Sprint Distance Triathlon European Championships will see around 2,000 triathletes swim, bike and run their way to glory. If you're one of the lucky participants or spectators visiting one of Germany's most popular tourist destinations for this event then you're in for a very special experience.

Following the success of the landmark 2014 event, the European Triathlon Championships returns to Kitzbuhel for the first time in three years for another historic race. The last event in the Austrian city brought around 20,000 additional hotel nights to the city and the Kitzbuhel Tourist Board expects similar numbers in 2017, so it's advisable to book sooner rather than later to guarantee yourself the best spot in the city.

Having been held every year in Almere since 1983, this is the second-oldest triathlon in the world; second only to Kona, Hawaii. At 4.5m below sea level, it is also the lowest triathlon in Europe! The course is located just 20 minutes from the Netherland's world-famous capital city of Amsterdam. It's therefore hardly surprising that over 2,700 athletes competed in last year's race and similar numbers are expected to be competing in 2017 at what promises to be another spectacular event.

With some great destinations to visit, Nirvana can make your trip even better. Not only do they offer top accommodation choices, they can also organise flights, airport transfers, bike transport, event transfers, bike mechanics and physio support.
