Most expensive countries for car hire in Europe revealed

Car hire in Portugal Portugal is the most expensive country in Europe to hire a car Photo: Alamy

Portugal is the most expensive country in Europe to hire a car, according to new research.

More than one in five British holidaymakers is planning to hire a car on the Continent this summer, thanks to the strong pound and the prospect of cheap petrol at the pump, says the Post Office.

The travel currency arm of the Post Office has released its annual Car Rental Report, which says that the costs travellers encounter for a week's rental varies greatly across Europe. It shows that it costs £553 to hire a car for a week in Faro, Portugal, including 40 litres of unleaded petrol, an additional driver and sat nav hire, and only £248 for the same in Copenhagen, Denmark.

• Holiday car hire: how to save money

Croatia was second most expensive destination (£547), followed by France (£447). Germany was the second cheapest (£264), followed by the Netherlands (£277).

The cost of car hire in Europe Total cost (?) Excess payable (?) Cost of EWI (?) Denmark 248 459 66 Germany 264 691 109 Netherlands 277 731 85 Cyprus 278 523 61 Turkey 279 292 50 Malta 280 645 98 Belgium 289 628 100 Sweden 314 549 60 Spain 320 798 94 Austria 337 633 89 Greece 385 599 84 Ireland 388 940 90 Italy 388 946 131 Norway 396 651 74 Switzerland 399 1,270 102 Majorca 415 800 104 France 447 589 86 Croatia 547 549 76 Portugal 553 794 90

The report said that of the 2,000 adults surveyed who had hired cars abroad, half had done so in Spain, where a week's rental costs £355 in Malaga and £415 in Majorca.

The report also urged holiday drivers not to cut corners on car rental by neglecting to purchase excess waiver insurance (EWI) that reduces the excess payable for accidents or theft to zero. The Post Office said half of UK drivers failed to take the optional extra.

• World's most expensive countries to visit

The potential excess costs renters could incur in the case of an accident or theft varies across the Continent, with those hiring in Switzerland staring down the barrel of a £1,270 bill – a fee that could be prevented by paying £102 for additional insurance, which also covers tyre and windscreen cover. The figures are an average of the three car hire companies in each country.

Those hiring in Turkey face the lowest excess payment, of just £292, while Spanish tourists could end up paying £798. The cost of the additional cover in the respective countries is £50 and £94.

• Should I buy excess car hire insurance?

Andrew Brown from the Post Office said: "It's a false economy to cut costs by sticking to the basic hire cost. We advise motorists to protect themselves against costs that could run into hundreds of pounds if the car suffers damage or is stolen.

"Don't leave it until you get to the rental desk in your holiday destination where you will be bombarded with questions and may sign on the dotted line without understanding what's included and what's not."

Telegraph Travel consumer expert Nick Trend said that buying a policy that cove rs the excess from another source, a global car insurance company, for example, is an alternative option to purchasing EWI.

Dubai named as top overseas destination for US job seekers

Dubai has become the most popular destination for US citizens to look for new jobs abroad, according to new research.

Research by health benefits provider Aetna International has revealed that US citizens are becoming more diverse when searching for jobs overseas with Dubai leap-frogging London as the top destination.

Since January 2013, Dubai has been the most sought-after location among US citizens searching for 'jobs in (country)' as they consider working abroad. This moves Europe's primary financial centre, London, to second-place after being the top of the wish-list since 2006.

Aetna International looked at Google Trends data for the world's 40 largest countries and their capitals since 2006.

Caroline Pain, marketing director Aetna International, said: "Compared with 2006, US citizens appear to be considering a far broader range of countries than ever before when it comes to working abroad.

"Dubai has now overtaken London as the most popular city for Americans looking for jobs overseas. It's also interesting to see Paris becoming the third most-searched global city, pushing Singapore down the table."

The remainder of the top ten most searched capital cities since January 2006 form a mix of old Europe – Rome, Geneva and Amsterdam – plus Cape Town in South Africa, Mexico City, and Ottawa in Canada.

Pain added: "Like everyone else around the world, it would appear US residents think about job prospects along with their New Year's resolutions. Our research analysis discovered two noticeable trends year-over-year – a peak in January, and in the middle of the year, with searches trailing off toward the end of the year."

Recently the Financial Times reported that the trend in US residents choosing to 'expatriate' has consistently risen since 2008 with the number reaching a record 3415 in 2014.

Aetna International's research highlighted the job search market experiencing a decline in 2011 but, since 2013, the overall trend shows a relatively steady level of interest in expat working.

Why China goes to Europe

« Previous

European Commission President Jean Claude Juncker (L), Chinese Premier Li Keqiang (C) and European Council President Donald Tusk attend a signing ceremony during a EU-China summit in Brussels, Belgium June 29, 2015.

Recent international attention has focused on China's destabilizing activities in the South China Sea, but ongoing economic developments between China and its major European trading and investment partners tell a different, more subtle story. Chinese Premier Li Keqiang's visit to Europe in June and July was a reminder to the world—and to the United States in particular—that China has more ways to advance its interests than precipitating security crises in its region. In Brussels, Li's call for Greece to remain in the eurozone demonstrated that China is now willing to present its case even on distant, economic issues. It is highly mindful of the potential risks if the Greek crisis were to undermine the EU's force in global commerce and finance.

China's economic presence in Europe began to increase in the early 2000s, but accelerated markedly following the 2008 financial crisis. China started diversifying its bond portfolio, buying European bonds instead of concentrating solely on U.S. treasury bonds. The China Ocean Shipping Company also won a 35-year concession for two terminals of Athens's Piraeus Harbor, thus becoming a key investor in Greece. As Li Keqiang made clear, China sees its relationship with the European Union as vital to its long-term interests, but primarily in economic terms. China sees growing ties to Europe as an alternative to dependence on the United States. It also seeks to convey to European states the potential for much deeper links between the EU and an economically emergent China.

The perils and promise of trading with China

Premier Li visited Brussels to attend the annual EU-China summit and celebrate the 40th anniversary of EU-China diplomatic relations. Trade between China and the EU now exceeds 1 billion euros every day. But how should Europe pursue these possibilities? The strategic issue facing all member states is to ensure that EU-China relations accord fully with the norms and practices that Europe has long fostered. No matter the potential allure of China-Europe relations that Beijing appears to offer, an economic future insufficiently moored to existing norms would be no bargain at all.

At present, the issues under review between China and the EU include heightened protection of intellectual property rights, a new agreement on science and technology, a landmark customs agreement, and a statement on climate change ahead of the Paris conference in December. The discussions between China and the EU on the 315 billion euro-European Fund for Strategic Investments (EFSI) are among the most important policy deliberations affecting long-term cooperation. China sees complementarity in its own grand infrastructure plan ("One Belt, One Road") to tie the future development of Central, South and Southeast Asia to increased Chinese trade and investment with Europe. But the EU's irritation with Beijing's "16+1" initiative to extend its cooperation to Central and Eastern European economies continues to place limits on its endorsement of China's larger strategy.

European leaders also continue to steer clear of detailed discussions of issues that the Chinese deem especially sensitive, but which EU policymakers recognize cannot ultimately be ignored. Human rights, mounting pressures on the activities of western nongovernmental organizations in China, and cybersecurity did not feature officially in the latest talks in Brussels. But the European Commission has undertaken more than 60 bilateral dialogues with China at lower levels, including on some of these more divisive issues.

On the South China Sea, which remains a highly contentious security concern between China and the United States, Germany and France have relied on rare statements from Brussels: The European Commission has released only two documents on mounting maritime disputes over the past two years. But European states take the law of the sea very seriously. Deteriorating conditions in the South China Sea could have important consequences in the Arctic or even in the Mediterranean, underscoring Europe's objections to unilateral changes in the status quo.

In contrast with European states' close economic engagement with China, they play a minimal role in Asian security arenas. Unlike the United States, European countries maintain a small military presence in the Asian region. At the same time, China has become highly adept at dividing various European capitals by offering investment and economic cooperation packaged to the needs of individual EU member states. Through a similar Chinese strategy, Germany, the United Kingdom, and France all suffered economic consequences following meetings between their respective leaders and the Dalai Lama. After the Nobel Peace Prize committee's decision to award the prize to Liu Xiaobo in 2010, China also sought to punish Norway, even though the committee is clearly independent of the Norwegian government (and the country is not a member of the EU).

Speaking with one voice

China's increased political and economic profile in Europe therefore requires enhanced cooperation among EU member states, so as to better ensure they speak with one voice. There is a parallel need for deeper exchanges between Washington and the EU. Despite the shared sentiments in a majority of capitals, the individual interests of various states provide China with ready opportunities to exploit national differences. For example, Budapest hastily offered to serve as the final European destination for the new "Silk Road." Similarly, London is focused on offering a grand welcome to President Xi Jinping in a state visit planned for October.

European leaders understand that dealing individually with a stronger China weakens the EU's hand. By linking its new "Silk Road" to Europe's own plans for infrastructural development, China seeks to play an enhanced role in the global economy and increase its stake in the EU. But major stakes for the future of the global trading order also loom, making it imperative that Europe proceed fully mindful of the potential consequences.

Europe must therefore enhance its internal deliberations on how to address a China that is clearly intent on a much more ambitious economic profile. China contends that the rules of the game must reflect its increased economic weight, but Europe needs to signal unambiguously that the future economic order remain based on the rule of law and established principles of cooperation. Closer consultations with the United States will also be essential to effectively delivering this message. Above all, Europe needs to demonstrate its readiness to act collectively to ensure European interests and to give China incentives to reinforce international practices that benefit both the region and the globe.

Top 20 Tourist Destinations in Prague

It's entirely possible to experience the beauty, history and magic of Prague on a whim and without a plan. With every cobble-stoned step and around every corner of the Golden City, there is something to be discovered. However, just like all other capital cities around the world, there are also top attractions, famous sites, key points of interest -- tourist destinations, if you will -- that should have ample place in your itinerary. What are those top tourist destinations in Prague? Grab a map for marking as we've got 20 to share with you!

2015-07-27-1437997132-8471847-4044826487_70c9b73296_o.jpgThe view from Prague Castle

1. Prague Castle - Pražský hrad

Last year alone, an estimated 6 million people visited the Prague Castle grounds and encompassing attractions, including St. Vitus Cathedral, Old Royal Palace, St. George Basilica, and the royal gardens. Peruse the grounds for free or purchase a ticket to enter the various other historical buildings and monuments. Be sure to check out the castle (and St. Vitus) lit up at night, props to the Rolling Stones.

2. Petřín Funicular and Rose Gardens - Lanová dráha na Petřín a Rosarium

Take the easy way up Petřín Hill via the historic railway from Lesser Town (Malá Strana). Once at the top, head to the Rose Gardens, meander Petřín park and/or climb to the top of the observation tower (Prague's "Eiffel Tower") for incredible views of the surrounding lands.

2015-07-27-1437997168-1836789-IMG_1926.jpgTraditional Czech food at the Old Town Square from one of the street food vendors

3. Old Town Square - Staroměstské náměstí

With rich history and a mix of Romanesque, Baroque and Gothic architecture, stepping into Old Town Square feels like an enchanted fairytale. St. Nicholas Church, Astronomical Clock, Týn Church and Jan Hus' statue, plus horse-drawn carriages, street performers and tourists aplenty adorn the historic square.

4. Golden Lane - Zlatá uličkaPart of the Prague Castle complex, Golden Lane is a quaint street lined with 11 historical little houses which, throughout the centuries, were home to castle guards, goldsmiths, alchemists and artists, including Franz Kafka. 5. Powder Tower - Prašná brána

Constructed in 1475, the Powder Tower is one of the original 13 city gates to separate the Old Town from the New Town. During the 17th century, it was used to store gunpowder, thereby earning its "new" name. Climb the 186 steps to enjoy views over Old Town.

6. Municipal House - Obecní dům

Next to the Powder Tower, find one of Prague's most famous and beautiful concert halls decorated in Art Nouveau style. Take a guided tour and visit the grandiose café (Kavárna Obecní dům) overlooking the Republic Square.

7. Prague Main Train Station - Praha hlavní nádraží

While not a traditional or sought-out tourist destination of Prague, the main train station surely hosts a lot of tourists. If you happen to be one of them, take note of the Art Nouveau décor, the original dome and stained glass windows when passing through.

8. National Museum - Národní museum

While the museum extends several locations, the neo-Renaissance historical building at the top of Wenceslas Square is the most recognized. Natural history, science, art, culture and various other exhibitions are housed here.

9. National Theatre - Národní divadlo

Not to be confused with the museum, the theatre with its unmistakable golden rooftop is located on the bank of the Vltava River. One of the most beloved cultural institutions in the capital city, the theatre has a rich history of art, music and theatre performances which continue today.

2015-07-27-1437997241-1333030-praguedancinghouse.jpgThe Dancing House

10. Dancing House - Tančící dům

The Dancing House's design (featuring the dance duo, Ginger Rogers and Fred Astair) was a source of controversy when it was built in 1996 as it was thought to clash with the Neo-Baroque, Neo-Gothic and Art Nouveau buildings typical to Prague. Now, the modern st ructure is well-regarded, filled with offices as well as a gourmet restaurant.

11. Havelská Market - Havelské Tržiště

Czech trinkets and tchotchkes galore, artwork, postcards, even fresh produce to go, Havelská Market is a convenient place near Old Town Square to find a quick Czech gift or souvenir.

2015-07-27-1437997282-7049397-IMG_1879.jpgThe Charles Bridge is often crowded at summer, but the view from the riverside is always picturesque

12. Charles Bridge - Karlův most

Without a doubt, the Charles Bridge is within Prague's "top 3 tourist attractions". The 14th century wonder connects Old Town (Staré Město) with the Lesser Quarter (Malá Strana). By day, it's bustling with artists, local vendors and tourists. At night or sunrise, enjoy more tranquility. Don't miss the historical Gothic Old Town Bridge Tower (Staroměstská mosteck věž) on the Old Town side of the bridge (climb to the top as you wish).

13. Jewish Quarters - Josefov

Tucked near Old Town Square, formerly the Jewish ghetto, there is remarkable history preserved here. Visit the oldest existing synagogue in Europe, the Jewish Cemetery and Jewish City Hall, and observe monuments which survived Nazi occupation.

14. Clementinum National Library - Klementinum

Prague's second largest complex (after the castle), the National Library houses an astronomical tower, Mirror Chapel, and Baroque Library Hall. A Jesuit college in 1556, the Charles University Library in 1622 and the National Library in 1781, many astronomers, scientists, mathematicians, philosophers, historians and musicians have gotten their smarts on here. Guided tours and daily concerts.

2015-07-27-1437997333-9367256-IMG_1908.jpgWenceslas Square come s alive at night with many restaurants and street vendors

15. Wenceslas Square - Václavské náměstí

Wenceslas Square has been eyewitness to some of the Czech Republic's most important historical events (including Prague Spring of 1968, the Velvet Revolution, and Václav Havel's memorial). The historical boulevard in the heart of New Town is today lined with shops, restaurants and clubs.

16. Communist Museum - Muzeum komunismu

Original artifacts, statutes, a reconstructed classroom, interrogation room and historical videos offer a window into the communist era of Czechoslovakia. Ironically, the museum is located along one of Prague's main shopping streets next to McDonald's.

2015-07-27-1437997378-7733174-4044829871_a63552ef23_o.jpgThe Lennon Wall is often covered in people's markings and graffiti

17. Lennon Wall - Lennonov a zeď

A gritty and colorful haven of creative expression, the Lennon Wall's origins date back to the 1970s when it was first known as the Wailing Wall, chalk-scribbled with poetry from Czech people. Following Lennon's assassination in 1980, the wall's chalk was replaced by colorful graffiti of Lennon's lyrics and rallies for peace, love and freedom. Today, the wall's messages and art continue to change daily.

18. Prague Zoo - Zoologická zahrada Praha

Perhaps more local than foreign tourists visit (with more than 1 million visitors annually), Prague Zoo is a favorite attraction set in the green Troja district of Prague. It's possible to spend a full day at the zoo but the river cruise, Trója Chateau, vineyards and Botanical Gardens nearby are additional highlights.

2015-07-27-1437997429-3345246-IMG_1836.jpgThe Zizkov Tower is most famous for th e David Cerny sculptures crawling up the side

19. Žižkov Television Tower - Žižkovský vysílač

Soaring high above the Žižkov district of Prague, the TV tower has earned its fair share of criticism throughout its approximately 30-year history, mainly for its communist era roots and bizarre design. Speaking of bizarre design, David Černý's crawling baby sculptures were added in 2000. The top of the tower has an observation deck and relaxation "pods", a gourmet restaurant and luxury accommodation. And fortunately, unlike most other towers in Prague, this one has an elevator!

20. Vyšehrad

Still not overly touristy (but certainly getting there), it's easy to spend at least a couple of hours here. Inside the stone-walled castle complex, there's much to explore, including the Church of Saint Peter and Paul, the cemetery where many famous Czechs are laid to rest (Dvořák, Smetana and Mucha), green parks, 360 views of the area, restaurants, cafes and an outdoor beer gar den and grill.

Millionaires from around the world want to move to Britain over any other country, a new survey has discovered.

The lure of good universities and schools, the ease of buying property and moving money, and the ability to travel freely within the European Union means increasing numbers of the super-rich from Russia, China and India want to become citizens in the UK.

Analysts New World Wealth and resettlement advisers Lio Global carried out the research, which showed the USA and Singapore trailed behind Britain as the top destination for so-call 'high-net-worth individuals (HNWIs)..

Super-rich: More millionaires want to move to Britain than anywhere else in the world, a survey has found. Part of the reason, say researchers, is the ease of buying property such as this multi-million mansion in London

Flash: Britain also rece ived a high number of millionaires from Europe, Africa and the Middle East

Appeal: Top education institutions - such as the University of Cambridge (left) - are enticing the super-wealthy to apply for citizenship. Other attractions include Britain's relatively relaxed rules about moving money

Britain also received a high number of millionaires from Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

Since 2000 more super-rich people are seeking second citizenship to help them make more money.

    TOP DESTINATIONS FOR SUPER RICH

    1. United Kingdom

    2. USA

    3. Singapore

    4. Australia

    5. Hong Kong

Nadia Read, head of world residence and citizenship platform LIO Global said: 'The main reason people apply for a second residence or citizenship is to ensure freedom of global mobility and access, as well as security and wealth protection for their families.'

She added: 'The majority of investors are typically looking towards the EU. Cyprus an d Malta, in particular, are very popular as they offer direct citizenship without long waiting or residence periods.

Top choice: The USA still has the biggest number of millionaires living in the country (pictured: New York)

Top destination: Singapore came third on the list of most attractive destinations for high wealth individuals

'Portugal's Golden Residence Visa, as well as the Hungarian Residence Bond program, have also seen significant interest, as they offer investors residence in exchange for a smaller investment (in comparison to Malta or Cyprus).

'The Caribbean has also recently seen strong demand as countries such as Antigua and Barbuda or Grenada offer direct citizenship in under six months.'

The study revealed that more millionaires left China over the past 14 years than anywhere else.

Across the world the USA still has the most HNWIs, with 4.1million people listed as millionaires in 2014. Japan came second with 1.3million, while the UK has 840,000, making it in third place.

Travelzoo Poll Reveals Friendliest Destinations in US And Beyond

While the friendliness or lack thereof of a particular city, state or destination is and always will be subjective, there's no question that some places are celebrated for their kind people and hospitality.

In an effort to single out those places, global Internet media company Travelzoo polled more than 6,400 U.S. adults to determine the friendliest U.S. cities, states and international destinations.

Sunny Honolulu emerged as the friendliest U.S. city, beating out a handful of other popular West Coast destinations. However the most surprising city breaking into the top 10 was No. 2 New York, a beloved city among travelers, but one with a tenacious reputation to say the least.

Leading entertainment capitals New Orleans and Las Vegas were also featured in the top five.

Here's the complete list, counting down from the friendliest.

    1. Honolulu

    2. New York

    3. New Orleans

    4. Las Vegas

    5. Boston

    6. San Diego

    7. San Francisco

    8. Charleston, S.C.

    9. Chicago

    10. Seattle

For the most part, the friendliest U.S. states based on Travelzoo's study share a common theme: sunshine. Florida, California and Hawaii are renowned for their weather and beaches, two factors that undoubtedly played a role in their position atop the list.

The South was also well-represented, though, with Texas, South Carolina and Georgia making the top 10.

Here's the complete list of the top 10 friendliest states.

    1. Florida

    2. California

    3. Hawaii

    4. New York

    5. Texas

    6. South Carolina

    7. Maine

    8. Georgia

    9. Washington

    10. Arizona

Travelzoo's poll also found Mexico, Italy and Australia to be the friendliest destinations in Latin America, Europe and Asia Pacific respectively. But Americans also consider Ireland, the U.K., Spain and the Netherlands among Europe's friendliest destinations.

Is Bollywood's romance with Switzerland over? Here's where filmmakers are headed in Europe!

Bollywood has always been synonymous with exotic locales and sceneries. If on one hand, the industry churns out realistic hard hitting dramas, it also treats its viewers with larger-than-life movies that are a sheer visual treat for their beautiful screenplay and shooting locations, on the other hand. One destination that has been an all time favourite among Bollywood filmmakers is Europe. The scenic continent has been captured on celluloid time and again, with Switzerland, Zuric, France, and Italy being the leaders.

But of late, while Europe continues to charm the movie makers, it seems the industry is now done with the usual places like Switzerland and France, as it is now exploring newer and lesser known places of the continent.

For instance, Rohit Shetty's upcoming film Dilwale is being shot in Bulgaria, which has not been frequented by Bollywood directors. The film's star cast, including Shah Rukh, Kajol, Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon, is still in the beautiful city wrapping up the shooting schedule.

Check out some more Bollywood flicks which looked beyond those beautiful snow-clad Swiss mountains, and ended up filming in the other side of Europe.

This small town of less than 300 people is a favorite of Veronica Lampon of Say Hueque. Although her firm is the No. 1 tour operator in Argentina, it only sells around one trip a year to this unexplored location—so you're sure to get a pristine adventure experience.

Located in the deserts of Northern Argentina, Tolar boasts beautiful mountains, rendered in technicolor thanks to mineral deposits, and a unique cultural experience that can't be beat. The remote location was heavily influenced by the Incas, and it remains untainted by waves of tourists. "You can still get a lot of that culture from 200 years ago," Lampon told us. "It's an amazing experience."

    For Watersport: Rio Cangrejal, Honduras

Situated in Northern Honduras, the Rio Cangrejal is "one of the great whitewater rafting and kayaking rivers in Central America," said Mark Willuhn of the Mesoamerican Ecotourism Alliance.

Using a coastal town like La Ceiba as your base, you can easily explore the Rio Cangrejal region and all it has to offer. After you give kayaking and rafting a try, head to the nearby Pico Bonito National Park to check out untouched rain forests without bumping elbows with other travelers. Or, peep exotic sea life on a snorkeling adventure on the Meso american Barrier Reef along the Honduran Bay Islands.

In Your Backyard: Point Reyes National Seahore, California

Although it's only an hour from San Francisco, Point Reyes National Seashore remains "very much a hidden secret," said Christina Tunnah of travel insurance operator World Nomads. "It's a jewel in that part of California that is still thankfully very pristine and still very rugged at the same time."

At Point Reyes, around 240 miles of trail beckons hikers, bikers and horseback riders to explore the protected countryside. On your travels, be sure to check out the historic lighthouse and the many wildlife viewing areas, such as the tule elk range or the Elephant Seal Overlook. Visit from January through April, and you may also catch a glimpse of the annual gray whale migration from one of the park beaches or headlands.

Adventure Made Easy: Town-Hopping in Alaska

Visiting Alaska is a surefire way to get off the beaten path, but it can seem daunting to pick a locale amidst its 660,000 square miles of terrain. We caught up with Jack Bonney of Visit Anchorage for a local's perspective.

His tips: Start and finish your trip in Anchorage for seamless airport access, then use the railroad system to explore Alaska's backcountry. Kick off your adventure in Seward, a small fishing town that's about a three-hour train ride from Anchorage. Explore the untouched seaside village, and take a quick boat trip to Kenai Fjords National Park which is home to 38 stunning glaciers and some of the most breathtaking views in Alaska.

For an even more off-grid experience, hop back on the Alaska Railroad to Spencer Glacier. "When the train pulls away, the people who got off the train with you are the only ones who are going to be out there," Bonney said with a smile. Enjoy float tours, hiking and camping at one of the most spectacular glaciers in Alaska before the easy train trip back to Anchorage. Adventure and convenience? Sign us up!

Soft Adventure Paradise: Amalfi Coast, Italy

Looking for an offbeat trip but aren't quite ready for sub-zero camping or remote hiking tours? Don't worry. You can have the best of both worlds on the Amalfi Coast of Italy, said Tom De Napoli of Diamante Eco Adventure Park in Costa Rica.

A less-traveled destination that's far from rugged, the Amalfi Coast is home to pristine beaches and stunning hillside towns. Take a relaxing bike or scooter ride, or simply enjoy the scenery in this quirky destination that's perfect for families and low-impact travelers.

    For Unmatched Diversity: Azores

Although it's a perennial editor's favorite for top 10 lists, this autonomous region of Portugal remains a relatively unknown destination for North American travelers.

A mere four-hour flight from Boston, the nine islands of the Azores each offer their own distinct landscape—ensuring something for everyone and ba nishing boredom for good. Explore the red deserts of Santa Maria, the lush mountain peaks of Sao Jorge, or the semi-submersed caves andstunning seaside vistas of Pico and Faial. Seriously, there's so much more than we could ever list here. Check out their website to learn more.

For Ancient History: Sierra de San Francisco, Baja California

This UNESCO World Heritage site is home to "the most significant collection of prehistoric rock art in North America," said Peter Grubb, founder of Row Adventures.

It's truly a trip of a lifetime, but expect a bit of a trek to get there: Visitors hike in on foot, using mules to carry their belongings, and are unlikely to run into anyone outside of their small tour group. Visited by only around 300 travelers a year, the site features remarkably well-preserved rock paintings from as far back as 100 B.C.

    Spot Some Wildlife: Pantanal, Brazil

"Honestly, the Pantanal is the most underrated destination," said George Duffy of Adventure Engine. Or, as Lonely Planet puts it, "The Amazon gets the press coverage, but the Pantanal is a better place to see wildlife."

Tour the lush rain forests of the region, and you're sure to see exotic native creatures maxin' and relaxin' without fear of tourist crowds. For sea life, head to Bonito for stunning freshwater snorkeling in warm, crystal-blue waters.

Boozy Adventure: Isle of Harris, Scotland

The mostly untouched Isle of Harris is home to some of the best beaches in Scotland—not to mention the most remote whiskey distillery in the world, set to open later this year. Tour the distillery and even reserve one of its first barrels, which you can pick up in 10 years after it's finished aging.

On your visit, take in the island's lush landscapes and stunning beaches on a cycling and hiking tour courtesy of Wilderness Scotland.

    The Offbeat Eurotrip: Macedonia

This landlocked Balkan nation, bordered by Albania and Greece, is the perfect place to "see authentic Europe that really hasn't been disrupted by tourism," advised Kathy Kramer of Firefly Journeys.

In Maced onia, check out rolling countrysides, stunning mountain vistas and picturesque villages—without a tour bus in sight. Link up withMacedonia Experience for hiking and biking tours with expert guides to make sure you don't miss a beat.

Celebrities’ travel destinations give a bucket list to visit

PROOF is in our Instagram feeds that a favourite time for celebrities to travel is during the European summer.

From George Clooney cruising down the Grand Canal in Venice to Channing Tatum dining in London and Zac Efron sailing the crystal clear waters in Italy, it's hard for youth globetrotters not to catch the travel bug.

The biggest FOMO for young travellers is finding the B-list budget to match the A-list travels of the rich and famous.

The savvy team at Topdeck Travel has put together a list of nine celebrity vacay destinations so Aussies can not only jet-set overseas, but also experience all Europe has to offer without the celebrity budget.

Topdeck general manager Sarah Clark said aspiring travellers often looked through their social media feeds for travel inspiration on where to go and what to do.

"At the tap of a finger, social media has the power to capture a moment in front of a landmark and connect travellers from around the world with others," she said.

"Celebrities have a major influence on people's lives and inspire young travellers to jet around the world and experience the same things they do.

"There are so many celebrity-inspired things to do during the European summer such as visiting a perfumery on the French Riviera, hiring a Vespa in Italy or seeing a leather demonstration in Florence.

"We want young travellers to feel like they can travel around Europe without breaking the bank and tick off all the things on their bucket list."

    Topdeck's nine Celebrity Vacay Destinations:

    1. Make like today's brat-pack leader Justin Bieber and hire a Vespa in Verona, Italy. Scoot around and visit the Ponte Scaligero and San Zeno Maggiore Church.

    2. Tick Berlin's Brandenburg Gate off your bucket list and make a stop past the nearby Hotel Adlon Kempinski. The hotel is still one of the most popular hotels in Europe, once hosting Charlie Chaplin and Queen Elizabeth II.

    3. Visit a perfumery on the French Riviera. Kate Moss, Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis are just some of the celebrities who have been to the French Riviera to enjoy its fine dining, stunning beaches and glamorous hotels.

    4. While George Clooney may prefer a private water taxi, youth travellers can replicate the experience, by a gondola ride down the Grand Canal in Venice.

    5. Feel like the only girl in the world, as Riri would say, and have a gourmet picnic beside the Eiffel Tower in Paris. As one of the best known sights in France, the Eiffel Tower will make for a perfect background for your #shamelessselfie.

    6. Tom Cruise, Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones all agree Dubrovnik is one of the most beautiful cities in Croatia. A cheap and easy way to vacay like a celebrity is to wander the hidden laneways and cobbled streets.

    7. Known to have some of the most beautiful sunsets in the world, the Greek Islands are an ideal way to travel like a celebrity, as the Kardashian clan did.

    8. Love Italian food but not sure it fits into a Hollywood diet? It sure does, even Queen B chowed down on pizza and snacked on gelato while holidaying in Italy. A true Italian experience.

    9. World War Z star Brad Pitt filmed the great final street battle in the streets of Budapest. Instead of having a street fight, have the same experience as Brad, by taking a dip in Budapest's geothermal springs. Ms Clark said the company has released its 'Limited Edition' 2016 Europe summer brochure featuring 24 epic adventures. The brochure features Europe trips for the 2016 summer at the 2015 prices, plus it includes a further 10% discount if booked and paid for in full before August 31.

Europe scores over others as preferred destination

JEDDAH: Almost 50 percent of Saudi tourists have headed for Europe to spend the Eid Al-Fitr holidays, thanks to weakening of the euro against the dollar and discounts offered by some airlines.

Saudi Arabia-Europe flights were fully booked by the end of Ramadan, said officials connected to travel and tourism."Tourist destinations like Turkey, Dubai, Malaysia and some East Asian countries, which are generally preferred by many Saudis, are witnessing a relative lull this summer due to the rising prices and temperatures there," said Nasser Al-Tayyar, the head of the National Tourism Committee at the Council of Saudi Chambers. He said the month of Ramadan coincided with the school summer vacation this year, so many of them planned to travel during this time.Another expert, Badar bin Mohammad, said the summer vacation witnesses a large number of Saudi families wanting to travel outside the Kingdom because of high temperatures in the Kingdom.Echoing Al-Tayyar's view, he said E urope, Malaysia and Turkey were preferred destinations by Saudi tourist, but Europe claimed a higher share of tourists this year because of the low prices of the euro. "However, Dubai still continues to be a preferred choice for some Saudi families."There has been an increase in the number of Saudi tourists this summer compared to the last season and the expenditure on outward tourism has increased, he said.A recent report released by the Tourism Information and Research Center (MAS) of the Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities revealed that Saudis' spendings on foreign tourism last summer rose by 32.7 percent compared to 2013."Expenditures on foreign tourism exceeded SR29.6 billion in 2014 compared to SR22.3 billion in the summer of 2013. Dubai, Bahrain and Qatar were leading destinations attracting 51 percent Saudi tourists last year, followed by the Middle East countries (29.2 percent), South Asia (9.2 percent) and Europe and the US (6.3 percent)," said the repor t.The report said that spending on local summer tourism last year exceeded SR6.2 billion compared to SR5 billion for the same period in 2013, an increase of nearly 24 percent.

Oh non! Paris dethroned by Moscow as Europe's premier shopping destination as its retail space soars

  • Moscow now has more than 4.53 million square metres of retail space
  • Paris, on the other hand, has just 4.5 million square metres
  • In Russia, mega-malls are particularly popular, despite economic downturn
  • 9

    View comments

Europe's recently-named fashion capital almost certainly isn't the city you'd expect.

Moscow has now overtaken Paris as the European city with the most shopping centre space, despite a recession that has forced Russians to cut back on spending.

The Russian capital now has more than 4.53 million square metres of shopping retail space, compared with 4.5 million square metres in Paris, according to real estate consultancy, Jones Lang LaSalle.

Moscow has been named Europe's fashion capital, boasting the most square metres of shopping retail space

However, experts told the Moscow Times that they expect a slump as the economic downturn catches up.

The new economic reality will likely end a trend of massive mega-malls and instead spur smaller shopping centres that are cheaper to manage.

'Small format shopping malls have great potential on the Moscow market since there are not enough of them,' Olesya Dzyuba, head of research at real estate firm Colliers International Russia, told the newspaper.

Nevertheless, a record six shopping centres have already opened in Moscow this year, measuring a total of 343,000 square metres.

Many considered Paris to be the premier shopping destination, given its prolific fashion houses

Despite the economic downturn, Russia has been consistently opening mega-malls in its capital

The mega-malls, which are only now opening, were actually in development long before the crisis began.

Unfortunately, because of the economic realities now, many retailers are no longer excited about developing their chains in Russia.

S ome expect the sharp slowdown to happen in 2017, when the number of new shopping centres will be reduced, as well as their size.

However, smaller complexes are not popular in Russia. Just look to the city's mega-mall, Avia Park, which opened last year at 228,500 square metres.

It is Europe's largest shopping centre.

And with 12 million residents, compared to Paris's 2.25 million, there are a lot of customers to fuel growth.

European Tourism Readies for the Peak Travel Season

European tourism maintains a firm footing this year according to the European Travel Commission's latest report "European Tourism 2015 – Trends & Prospects". A significant majority of European destinations registered positive growth in the pre-summer months proving the resilience of the sector and underlining its significance as a contributor to the region's ongoing economic recovery.

Best performers are Iceland (+30 percent), Montenegro (+19 percent) and Romania (+16 percent) experiencing a substantial growth in the number of international tourist arrivals. Following are Ireland (+14 percent), Croatia (+14 percent), Slovenia (+10 percent) Serbia and Cyprus (both +10 percent) also reporting double-digit increases. Among Europe's most popular destinations, Germany (+5 percent), Spain (+4 percent), Italy (+4 percent) and the UK (+3 percent) saw healthy growth with optimism set towards the peak travel season.

Travel-hungry citizens keep boosting travel flows in the pre-summer months, especially those from Germany, the Netherlands, France and Italy. Meanwhile, travel from the UK is spurred by favorable exchange rates increasing the attractiveness of Europe as a travel destination.

Long-haul markets perform better and remain an important source of international tourist arrivals, particularly from North American and Asian markets. Macro-economic indicators in the US point to a solid recovery with GDP growth expected to reach +3 percent in 2015 according to the World Economic Outlook report in addition to favorable financial conditions, an increase in power spending and business and consumer confidence beside low oil prices. A weaker Euro keeps supporting an upturn in demand for European destinations pointing at solid growth over the summer months.

On the downside, the Russian economy continues to face difficulties to level off and it is still expected to see a deep backdrop in 2015. A decrease in oil prices and the consequent plunge in the Rubble against the Euro are expected to hit European tourism destinations in 2015 while international sections have already affected on the tourist industry.

Foreign travel has become costly for Russian tourists with traditional hot-spot destinations being the most affected. Besides, the influx of tourists across borders declines so is the spending among those that actually travel as their expenditure continues to plummet in 2014.

Fostering the region at a pan-European level to strengthen competitivenessInternational tourism worldwide is experiencing growth primarily driven by the performance of advanced economies and long-haul markets. The travel and tourism sector still remains Europe's main driver of growth under the cloud of socio-economic disruptions.

However, to ensure Europe's leading position as the #1 tourist destination worldwide amid a challenging and uncertain socio-economic environment, European tourism organizations are called to foster sustainable product development and promotion encouraging the diversity of products and experiences offered by the destination at a pan-European level.

"In order to remain the world's first tourist destination, Europe must respond to these shifting patterns in global tourism capitalizing on the potential of tomorrow's outbound travel markets whose expanding middle classes are a growing market for European destinations", said Eduardo Santander, Executive Director European Travel Commission.

Day Tripping: Famed sculptor’s home a great summer destination

CORNISH, N.H. >> A bigger-than-life-sized statue of Abraham Lincoln is making its way to the only National Park Service site in New Hampshire.

With next year's presidential primary coming up, don't be surprised if front-runners from both parties attend the Sept. 26 gathering.

A 12-foot bronze, "Standing Lincoln," is one of the many pieces that launched Augustus Saint-Gaudens' career as America's pre-eminent sculptor of the late 19th century.

"Saint-Gaudens was greatly influenced by Lincoln," said Ray Auger, a ranger at the artist's home, Aspet, in Cornish, N.H. "He heard Lincoln speak at Cooper Union in New York during the 1860 presidential campaign. And when Lincoln's body was brought to New York following his assassination, Saint-Gaudens went through the long line twice to see the president lying in state."

The original statue is found in Lincoln Park, Chicago. A new bronze casting will be unveiled at Aspet to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Lincoln's passing, and the 50th anniversary of Aspet as a National Historic Site. Saint-Gaudens named the brick Greek Revival house, built as a country inn around 1800, and the picturesque landscape around it for his father's birthplace in France.

The artist purchased the site as a summer retreat in the 1880s and spent his final years there on a year-round basis. Its spacious grounds with sculpture gardens, tall hedges and expansive lawns provide panoramic views of Ascutney Mountain, directly across the Connecticut River in Vermont. At more than 3,100 feet high, it is the tallest "monadnock" – isolated mountain – east of the Mississippi River.

Born in Dublin, Ireland, Saint-Gaudens came to New York with his parents at a young age. Following an apprenticeship making cameos, he went back to Europe to study art in France and Rome, which greatly influenced his later works depicting Lincoln and Union heroes of the Civil War.

Saint-Gaudens' first major work, a sculpture of Admiral David Farragut – who proclaimed, "Damn the torpedoes, full steam ahead!" – was done to convince his bride-to-be's father that he was capable of supporting a wife. The statue stands in New York's Madison Square Park.

Saint-Gaudens also did an immense bronze, in Boston, of the famed 54th Massachusetts Infantry, an African-American outfit led by Col. Robert Shaw, a white officer who was killed during the assault on Fort Wagner near Charleston, S.C. The film version of the 54th's story was the subject of the movie "Glory" starring Matthew Broderick as Shaw.

Soon, "Standing Lincoln" will join the replica castings of Farragut, the 54th Infantry and many other famous statues found at Aspet.

"The 'Standing Lincoln' is in many ways the reason we have a National Park in Cornish today," said Rick Kendall, site superintendent. "Saint-Gaudens moved to Cornish specifically to work on this piece and found a local model to pose for the sculpture. It would be the first monument he would complete here in New Hampshire."

In the early 1900s, President Theodore Roosevelt called on Saint-Gaudens to do the intricate artwork for U.S. coinage including handsome $10 and $20 gold pieces.

Visits to Aspet include tours of the home and the artist's studios along with an informative Visitors Center orientation film. Spacious grounds include wooded trails where people may absorb the beauty, solitude and natural surroundings that helped Saint Gaudens produce his masterpieces.

The trip there, through rural central Vermont, is half the fun. Route 103 takes travelers past covered bridges, quaint New England towns and countless pristine working farm fields.

The longest covered bridge in America crosses the Connecticut River near Aspet between Windsor, Vt. and Cornish, N.H. The 460-foot long Cornish-Windsor Bridge, built in 1866, is also the longest two-span covered bridge in the world.

Like Saint-Gaudens' art, it has stood the test of time and is an enduring part of America's heritage.

An early autumn leaf-peeping trip for "Standing Lincoln's" Sept. 26 dedication would be a great time to visit this historic site. However, there's plenty on tap this summer, too. The calendar for July and August features a variety of fun concerts and interesting sculpture workshops.

12 Hour Destination Guide to Bled, Slovenia

2015-07-11-1436655245-6815279-sloveniaboat.jpgBy College Tourist; Author: Emily Poklar, University of Wisconsin - Madison

A city surrounded by the Julian Alps, small neighborhoods, homemade stews and wine, and with a stunning lake in the center - the Slovenian city of Bled is the perfect "off the beaten track" day trip to add to your itinerary.

While Slovenia is commonly overlooked in European vacations, it is one of the most beautiful countries. Not only is the food amazing and the people friendly, the country never feels tourist heavy. No matter the restaurant, bar or museum, it feels as if you are always surrounded by locals.

The city of Bled is the perfect glimpse of Slovenian culture. Here's a 12 hour guide to make the most of your trip.

10AM: Whether you spent the night in the capital of Ljubljana or booked a hotel room in Bled, grab a hearty breakfast to fuel your adventurous day. The Vila Ajda in Bled is the perfect restaurant to grab a Slovenian brunch with a view. Whether you sit inside or on the summer patio, you will have an incredible panoramic view of Lake Bled and the surrounding mountains. Plus, you'll get an authentic Slovenian meal! Opt for the bread with fresh marmalade to blend in with the locals.

11AM: Grab a taxi and head over to Bled Castle. The narrow and winding road may be a bit daunting but the view at the top makes it worth the nerves. The castle itself has a small museum, printing press, winery and smithery. After an hour exploring the grounds and the history of Bled, grab a bottle of wine from the winery. For €10, you can fill and cork your own bottle! Enjoy yourself while drinking in the view, and your wine.

12PM: Take another taxi to the other side of the lake. Just tell the taxi driver you want to take a boat to Bled Island, which is at the center of th e lake. For €8, a man will row you across the lake, and tell you a little about the history of the island. Fun fact: The steep steps leading from the waterfront to the church at the top are a hard climb for most soon-to-be husbands. Why? Because it's urban legend that when a couple is married in the church, the husband has to carry her up all 99 steps to have a blessed marriage.

1PM: After exploring the island, and probably buying a few souvenirs, head into town to eat lunch. Golstina Murka has an incredible selection of lunch food and is known for being the best traditional restaurant in Bled. If you're still feeling pretty satisfied from breakfast but know you have a long day ahead, order one of the stews. They are full of vegetables and pasta, and taste wonderful.

2PM: By now, you'll have realized just how stunning Slovenia's landscape is. Take a 10 minute taxi from the restaurant to Vintgar Gorge, a natural gorge running through the forest. The walk through the gor ge takes about 45 minutes and really emphasizes Slovenia's natural beauty. Look forward to the waterfall at the end!

    2015-07-11-1436655285-2392545-sloveniagorge.jpg

3PM: After your walk through the gorge, stop for an ice cream cone at the end. There is a little stand that sells various treats. You deserve a reward!

3PM-6PM: Celebrate your walk by heading over to Grajska Beach, right by Bled Castle. Packed with water slides, a rock climbing wall, and thermal pools, it's the perfect way to cool off after your long day. Admission is only €5 per adult!

6PM: At this point, you're probably feeling exhausted and ready to shower. Head to your hostel to clean off and check-in, if you haven't already. Hostel Bled is only 2 km outside the city and is the perfect price for the amenities. If you flew into Ljubljana or trained to the main sta tion, the woman who works there will shuttle you to and from the hostel. Also, the beds are super comfortable and the Wi-Fi is free. Check it out on Hostelworld to see more reviews.

Some 150,000 Migrants Have Reached Europe By Sea This Year — 1,900 Have Not

This past Monday, the remains of five migrants were discovered in the waters off the coast of Tunisia.

A day later, four — or perhaps five — more lost their lives, and at least 15 others were reported missing, after a boat carrying 40 refugees capsized between Turkey and the sparsely populated Greek islands of Farmakonisi and Agathonisi.

On Thursday, another four bodies were discovered off Tunisia; at least 12 would later perish off the Libyan coast at the bottom of a rubber dinghy, authorities said.

This grim tally provides a snapshot of the risks taken by a wave of humanity fleeing the clutches of war and poverty to face a perilous journey over water and into Europe.

So far this year, 1,900 migrants have died in the Mediterranean — twice the number that didn't make it to their destination over the same period in 2014, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported on Friday.

For every tragic death, scores more survive the gamble: IOM estimated that some 150,000 migrants have reached Europe by sea to date this year, almost all bound for Italy and Greece.

On average, 1,000 refugees are now arriving on the Greek islands every day, according to the UN Refugee Agency, with more than 77,000 touching land in 2015. That's more than the number that arrived in all of last year, the IOM said, and a dramatic influx for a small country in the midst of an economic crisis.

"An urgent response from Europe is needed before the situation deteriorates further," UNHCR spokesperson William Spindler said at a press briefing in Geneva on Friday.

Syrians are now overwhelming choosing Greece over over Italy as their preferred destination, and using an eastern Mediterranean route through Turkey and Greece to get there.

More than 60 percent of the Greece-bound refugees hail from Syria, with others traveling from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, and Somalia. Eritreans make up the biggest group of refugees to Italy, at more than 18,000 so far this year, while Nigerians, Somalians and Syrians are also arriving in droves. A total of 170,000 migrants arrived in Italy by sea in all of 2014, IOM reported, and 34,400 landed in Greece.

Some of those who make it have to thank the efforts of Italian and Hellenic coast guards, along with European Union vessels deployed in the region. Just this week, Italian vessels managed to save 393 migrants crowded onto four dinghies about north of Libya, including one that was partially submerged with the remains of the aforementioned 12.

Federico Soda, a Rome-based official with IOM, noted that while the number of migrants arriving in Europe is "substantial", it should not be described as "an invasion".

"Lebanon, a country of 4 million people, is hosting 1.5 million Syrian refugees and Turkey is hosting about 2 million," he said in a press release.

UNWTO: Global tourism arrivals up with strong growth in Central and Eastern Europe

International tourism demand continued to be robust between January and April 2015 with tourist arrivals increasing 4% worldwide according to the latest UNWTO World Tourism Barometer. Almost all regions enjoyed strong growth. Prospects for the May-August period remain upbeat, with close to 500 million tourists expected to travel abroad during these four months.

Destinations worldwide received some 332 million international tourists (overnight visitors) between January and April 2015, 16 million more than the same period last year, corresponding to an increase of 4%.

This result follows an increase of 4.3% in 2014 and consolidates the upwards trend of international tourism in recent years (+4.5% international tourist arrivals a year on average since 2010).By region, the Americas (+6%) led growth, followed by Europe, Asia and the Pacific and the Middle East, all recording 4% to 5% more arrivals. By subregion, Oceania and South America boasted the strongest increase (both +8%), followed by the Caribbean and Central and Eastern Europe (both +7%), the latter rebounding from last year's decline. In Africa, demand weakened in 2014 after years of solid growth, affected mainly by the Ebola outbreak among other challenges. Limited data currently available for January-April 2015 points to a 6% decline, as African destinations struggle to recover from the misperceptions affecting the continent.

"It is encouraging to see the tourism sector consolidating its excellent results despite security concerns and unrest in many parts of our world", said UNWTO Secretary-General, Taleb Rifai. "This underscores that tourism is a surprisingly resilient economic sector which increasingly contributes to development in many countries around the globe. For national governments, it is a reminder that tourism can be part of the solution to foster socio-economic development and job creation", he added.

Strong results across many destinations with a rebound in Central and Eastern Europe

In the Americas (+6%) all four subregions continued to enjoy significant growth in January-April 2015, led by South America (+8%) and the Caribbean (+7%). Strong outbound demand from the United States fuelled results as 20 million US tourists travelled abroad through April, 7% more than during the same period last year.Asia and the Pacific (+4%) consolidated its growth of recent years, with Oceania (+8%) and North-East Asia (+5%) in the lead. South-East Asia (+3%) recorded moderate results this four-month period as the rebound in Thailand (+25%) was offset by declines in other destinations.

Europe, the world's most visited region, enjoyed continued strength with international tourist arrivals growing by 5% through April. Arrivals in Central and Eastern Europe increased by 7%, rebounding on the poor results of 2014 following the conflict in Ukraine and the slowdown of the Russian economy. Southern Mediterranean Europe (+5%) maintained strong growth, though for many destinations these are low season months. Western Europe and Northern Europe both enjoyed a solid 4% increase in arrivals, partly due to good results in traditional winter sports destinations.

International tourist arrivals in the Middle East are estimated to be up by 4% through April, further continuing the region's recovery which started in 2014 after three consecutive years of declines. Africa's international tourist numbers, on the other hand, declined by an estimated 6% as a consequence of the decrease in arrivals to North Africa (-7%) as well as to sub-Saharan Africa (-5%). Figures for both Africa and the Middle East should be read with caution, as they are based on limited available data for these regions.

"The Ebola crisis in West Africa and the security concerns are serious challenges for Africa's tourism and for the international community as a whole. We must work together in managing and overcoming these challenges and in supporting destinations for a prompt recovery. It is important to remember that tourism is the lifeline of many communities around the world and that we face today a global threat that affects all our societies", said Mr. Rifai.

Optimistic prospects for the coming months

Close to 500 million tourists are estimated to travel abroad between May and August 2015, the Northern Hemisphere holiday peak season, a total that accounts for some 41% of all international tourist arrivals registered in a year.

According to the latest results of the UNWTO Tourism Confidence Index, prospects for this period continue to be bullish and are the highest for this period since the pre-crisis year 2007. The sentiment is positive among all regions and areas of activity.

Business intelligence tool ForwardKeys also shows healthy growth in international air travel reservations for May-August 2015. Overall bookings are up 5% thanks to strong demand for domestic air travel (+7%) and continued growth in international travel (+4%). By region, air reservations increased most in Asia and the Pacific, the Americas and Europe, while reservations to and from Africa and the Middle East are weaker.

According to the forecast issued by UNWTO in January this year, international tourist arrivals are expected to increase by 3% to 4% for the full year 2015, in line with UNWTO's long-term forecast of 3.8% a year for the period 2010 to 2020.

Please note that results presented here reflect preliminary data reported to date and are subject to revision.

European Group Picks Ethiopia as Top Global Tourist Destination for 2015

Ethiopia has been chosen as this year's top destination in the world for tourists by the European Council on Tourism and Trade (ECTT), a non-profit group of European Union tourism trade organizations.

Africa's second-most populated country was chosen for its "excellent preservation of humanity landmarks" such as the ruins of the city of Aksum, known as the heart of ancient Ethiopia, and Fasil Ghebbi, which served as the residence of the Ethiopian emperors during the 16th and 17th century.

It is also home to Harar Jugol—considered the fourth holiest Islamic city with 82 mosques, 102 shrines, and unique interior design in the townhouses—and Lalibela, a holy site encompassing 11 medieval stone carved churches from the 13th century.

Other sites include the Konso Cultural Landscape (containing 55 kilometers of stonewalled terraces and fortified settlements) and Lower Valley of the Awash, where the fossil remains of Lucy were discovered. All these sites are registered as UNESCO World heritage monuments.

In addition to heritage sites, Ethiopia is recognized for its natural parks and reservations, including the Simien National Park.

The Ethiopian embassy celebrated the award with a tweet including some of the country's popular tourist spots.

Tourism has been identified by the Ethiopian government as one of the key areas of development to help eradicate poverty. Tourism has grown consistently, according to World Bank data: In 2013, the country welcomed 681,000 visitors compared with 468,000 in 2010.

While civil society has been stunted in Ethiopia, economic growth has charged ahead. Between 2003 and 2013, the country averaged a growth rate of 10.8%—more than twice the regional average of 5.3%. The country's growth has been driven not just by agriculture, but also by industrial production and the services industry—a rare example of economic diversification in Sub-Saharan Africa. The government has brokered deals with international investors led by the Chinese, and has been directing investment into productive sectors.

The IMF has classified Ethiopia as one of the five fastest growing economies in the world. Ethiopia's capital, Addis Ababa, has been described as 'the Dubai of Africa.' The construction boom there is a microcosm of the country's overall transformation.

Later this month Barack Obama will become the first sitting U.S. president to visit Ethiopia, when he travels there as part of an Africa trip that will also include Kenya.
